Here’s a recap of the two games and the top Oregon performers from both.
Lake Oswego 93, Cleveland 55
If Thursday night was any indication, it appears that Lake Oswego may need to be in any conversation about 6A title contenders. The Lakers jumped out to an early 12-0 lead and simply shot the lights out all night against Cleveland. All 12 players that played scored and seven different players hit a three-pointer in an absolutely dominant performance on both ends.
“Right now, we’re a little ahead of where we want to be, but we’re not content,” said Lake Oswego head coach Marshall Cho. “We’ve talked about the championship mindset of the football guys that just won and we’re bringing that to the basketball program.”
Roosevelt 63, Oakland 55
In the first game of the evening, Roosevelt rebounded from a very poor shooting first half and used defensive pressure to build and hold a lead in the second half over the visiting Wildcats. Offense may be a challenge on some nights for the Roughriders, but their level of defensive pressure and intensity will give them the opportunity to stay in many games this season.
“Our guys played hard,” said Roosevelt head coach Yusef Leary. “We’re getting better, we’re facing adversity and working on our composure, and I’d rather be working on that now than towards the end of the season.”
Top Performers
Josh Angle (2019 Lake Oswego) – Stats: 22 pts, 5 reb, 5 ast, 6-11 fg, 5-9 3pt, 5-6 ft. Angle started off the game dribbling up and nailing a three, which proved to the theme for Lake Oswego the entire game long. He ended up hitting four threes in the first half, but the senior’s game wasn’t just about shooting. He capably ran the point when given the opportunity, took good care of the basketball, and found open teammates especially in transition. Angle was also active on the defensive end, playing the passing lanes to grab a couple of steals.
Wayne McKinney (2021 Lake Oswego) – Stats: 14 pts, 5 reb, 3 ast, 5-9 fg, 2-3 3pt, 2-2 ft. McKinney attacked the basket relentlessly, using his athletic body to penetrate and elevate, and provided some acrobatic finishes near the rim. But the sophomore point guard also canned a couple of pull-up jumpers and knocked down two open threes. Like Angle, he took good care of the ball and helped LO get out in transition, while also helping out on the boards.
Fred Harding (2019 Lake Oswego) – Stats: 5 pts, 4 reb, 2-2 fg, 1-3 ft. This was Harding’s first game of the season after finishing out with LO’s title-winning football team. The senior is still getting into basketball shape, but he ran the floor well and by doing so, earned one fast break dunk in transition and almost finished another basket but was called for the offensive foul.
Dylan Senf (2019 Lake Oswego) – Stats: 17 pts, 1 reb, 3 ast, 7-8 fg, 3-4 3pt. Senf was the find of the day. A four-year program guy, the 6-foot-2 senior put up an incredible performance, taking what the defense gave him and knocked down open shots. He also had a couple of nifty passes to teammates for easy buckets. Senf has a solid build and a lefty touch and it appears Cho will have another option off the bench to use this season.
John Carr (2019 Cleveland) – Stats: 20 pts, 3 reb, 5-9 fg, 2-3 3pt, 8-9 ft. Carr was perhaps the lone bright spot for Cleveland. He was effective offensively but didn’t necessarily have to force the action, but instead took what the defense took him. Carr had a smooth shot out to three and also was able to draw contact on drives.
Joey Rodrick (2019 Cleveland) – Stats: 13 pts, 6 reb, 3-10 fg, 2-7 3pt, 5-11 ft. Rodrick largely struggled with his shot all night, but as Cleveland’s top offensive threat on most nights, he stayed aggressive offensively, absorbing contact on drives to draw fouls. He also did his best to help out on the boards by grabbing a team high.
Jayoni Moore (2020 Roosevelt) – Stats: 19 pts, 2 reb, 1 ast, 6-17 fg, 3-8 3pt, 4-7 ft. Moore was a little streaky with his shooting, but his two threes in the second half helped give the Roughriders some distance away from Oakland they needed at the time. As one of the main shot-makers on the team, he made plays when they counted. Moore also showed good balance with attempting shots at all three levels as well as drawing fouls.
Malik Kelley (2020 Roosevelt) – Stats: 12 pts, 8 reb, 3 ast, 4-8 fg, 4-7 ft. Kelley operated mainly from the high post but was able to use his thick 6-foot-3 frame to create from that spot or finish down low. Kelley is actually fairly skilled with the basketball and he dished out a couple of nice looking assists with interior passing. There is no doubt that Roosevelt will be counting on him to be their post presence this season.
Jonah Williams (2021 Roosevelt) – Stats: 5 pts, 2 reb, 3 ast, 2-5 fg, 0-1 3pt, 1-2 ft. Williams may not have racked up a ton of statistics, but he was very impressive with his non-stop motor on both ends, especially with the way he got up in the face of opponents on D. Starting at the point, he had a couple of quick-twitch passes where the ball barely touched his hands before he got it off to a teammate for the easy hoop.
