This year the field of teams have been broken up into different brackets, we will begin with an overview and preview of the opening round matchups in the Ike Walker Sr. bracket that will be played at 71st HS.
Westover vs Clinton HS: Westover comes into this matchup undefeated so far with a record of 8-0, they are led by Senior Guard Tyron George and Juniors Isaiah Bridges and Traymond Willis-Shaw. This is a team that doesn’t have a ton of depth and experience but they have hit the ground running and seem to have bought in to Coach Stackhouse system. Clinton HS season so far has been up and down with a record of 5-4. They basically graduated their entire starting five so some growing pains is not necessarily a surprise or them. One of the bright spots is Senior Guard Cameron Lawson, who is averaging just under 16 PPG.
South View HS vs 71st: This is the only matchup of two teams in the county in this bracket and 71st will get the opportunity to play in front of their home fans. 71st features the senior big three of: BJ McLaurin, Tre Bell and Demauriea Nickelson, all of whom have received some type of college interest to play on the next level. South View HS features Senior Guard Christian Locklear and Kevin Garcia, both who had some good showings over the summer and can score the ball well once they get going. For South View to pull off the upset, they must slow down the tempo of the Falcons, otherwise it could lead to a long night for the Tigers.
Middle Creek vs Cape Fear: The Cape Fear Colts are led by Cumberland County leading scorer Marquell James who is averaging over 24 points a night, which includes a 40 point performance. Middle Creek hasn’t gotten off to the best start but their size is something that could cause some issues for Cape Fear. They feature 6’7 Sophomore Forward Sam Perez who is averaging 14 points and 6 rebounds per night.
EE Smith vs Cardinal Gibbons: The Golden Bulls picked up a big win on the road on Friday as they got the upset over Pine Forest HS. EE Smith is a squad with a mixture of players from all classes and a new head coach leading the way for them. We figured they would have some success once they all got comfortable with each other and figured out their roles. Cardinal Gibbons will be a test for them to, one player in particular that they will have to try and slow down is Senior Guard Mike Walsh, who is averaging over 26 PPG.
