The Southern Section out-dueled the San Diego Section by a five wins to two margin. Here’s a brief breakdown of how the top 2019 prospects in the gym performed.
Onyeka Okongwu, Chino Hills
Okongwu, a USC-signee, was virtually unstoppable in a win over Mission Bay as the only person who slowed him was the referee with a couple questionable whistles. The 6-foot-9 center finished with 22 points, 20 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 blocks, revealing what some new, but many didn’t about his game with his high level passing ability out of the post.
Boogie Ellis, Mission Bay
Ellis didn’t have his best shooting performance, needing 30 shots to score his 27 points, but a lot of the credit for that has to go to the defensive job that Chino Hills did on him. Ellis, bound for Duke, was forced into some very difficult shots and made a couple of them in impressive fashion. There’s no denying the immense talent that Ellis possesses.
Bryce Pope, Torrey Pines
Most of the Torrey Pines’ offense runs through this Pope brother, but he got off to a slow start in the first half, going scoreless through the first 16 minutes of play. The UCSD signee picked it up in the second half, finishing with 11 points, but was held to 4-for-14 from the field due to Bishop Montgomery’s strong team defensive effort.
Jackson Larsen, El Cajon Christian
When it comes to a “high motor” player, look no further than Larsen as someone who embodies that trait. The 6-foot-7 wing is unbelievably active on both ends of the floor and much more athletic than he’s given credit for. Larsen, who will attend Northern Arizona in the fall, finished with 32 points on an efficient 13-for-24 from the field and 3 of 5 from deep. He also pulled down 13 rebounds.
Jarred Hyder, Damien
We already knew Hyder was a dangerous offensive player while at Cajon, but his transfer to Damien only amplified that fact by playing under offensive mastermind coach, Mike LeDuc. Hyder a Fresno State commit, scored 18 points in the Spartans win over La Jolla Country Day with seven of those coming in the fourth quarter.
Josh Vazquez, a Montana-bound point guard, is the steadying force for Bishop Montgomery.Josh Vazquez, Bishop Montgomery
Vazquez has been the steadying force at the point guard position for the Knights with Gianni Hunt sidelined due to injury since the opening week of the season. The Montana-bound floor general did a little bit of everything for Bishop in its win over Torrey Pines, scoring 16 points to go along with five assists and three steals.
Ryan Langborg, La Jolla Country Day
Langborg has a ridiculously heavy load on his shoulders when it comes to scoring for LJCD, but if there’s one thing the Princeton-bound shooting guard can do, it’s put the ball through that net. Langborg scored a game-high 32 points in a loss to Damien on 13-for-20 shooting, including five rebounds, four assists and five blocked shots.
Will Crawford, Bishop Montgomery
Crawford continues to surprise some with his 3-point shooting abilities from deep, both out pick-and-pop situations and when trailing the break in transition. The 6-foot-6 forward scored 20 points in the Knights’ win over Torrey Pines and connected on six of his eight 3-point shots.
