The Southern Section out-dueled the San Diego Section by a five wins to two margin. Here’s a brief breakdown of how the top 2022 prospects in the gym performed.
2022 Performers
Jalen Vazquez, Bishop Montgomery
Jalen is the younger brother of Bishop senior Josh Vazquez and he mirrors his older brother’s game quite a bit. Both play with good pace, a high basketball IQ and never seem to get sped up or look in distress under pressure. The younger Vazquez finished with five points, seven rebounds and four assists in the Knights’ win over Torrey Pines.
John Hapgood, La Jolla Country Day
John is one part of the twin brother duo at LJCD along with James, and when his brother went down early with an ankle injury, John stepped up in a big way. The 6-foot guard scored 11 points on 4 of 8 shooting and added six rebounds in a strong 30-plus minute effort.
Lewis Singleterry, Murrieta Mesa
Singleterry has a strong frame for a freshman prospect and that, combined with his speed and quickness, make him a solid sixth-man this year and guy you can potentially build around moving forward at the high school level. Singleterry’s stat line was modest with four points and three assists, but he’s a tenacious on-ball defender, which is probably the most difficult side of the floor for most freshmen to adjust to.
Damien freshman RJ Smith helped the Spartans upend LJCD with a 10-point, 17-rebound effort at the BSN Showcase.RJ Smith, Damien
Smith is one of the most “under-the-radar” freshmen in all of Southern California. In a time where the social media hype machines are constantly flowing, the 6-foot-4 Damien wing doesn’t get enough credit for how good he is and how good he can be. Smith scored 10 points with 17 rebounds, 10 of those on the offensive end, in the Spartans’ win over LJCD. Smith’s point total could have (and should have) been much higher, but there was a lid on the rim for him as he missed a good amount of chippy put-back layups.
Vinny Signorelli, El Cajon Christian
Signorelli has what we like to call the “green light” when he checks into the game and it’s for good reason. The 5-foot-10 guard firmly established himself as a big time shooter with deep range, connecting on 4 of his 9 triples en route to 16 points.
