The Southern Section out-dueled the San Diego Section by a five wins to two margin. Here’s a brief breakdown of how the top 2021 and 2022 prospects in the gym performed.
2021 Performers
Malik Thomas, Damien
Thomas is one of the more lethal sophomore scoring threats in Southern California and the BSN Showcase proved no different. The 6-foot-3 wing led the Spartans with 25 points on 10-for-21 shooting in a win over LJCD. Thomas also added nine rebounds to his strong performance.
Joseph Johnson, Damien
Johnson is a crafty left-handed guard who can fill up the scoring column in a hurry. The 6-foot-1 shooting guard had 15 points for Damien in just under 19 minutes of action. He shot 6-for-10 from the field, including 2-for-3 from behind the arc. Johnson swiped four steals, as well.
Keavie Love, El Camino
Love has a strong, football-looking frame at 6-feet-2, and we’re starting to see his basketball skill set evolve. The Wildcats’ guard led all scorers with 17 points in El Camino’s showcase-opening win over Brea Olinda. Love went 7 of 13 from the field and grabbed nine rebounds to go along with five steals. Love accomplished all of this in only 22 minutes of court time.
Caleb Nelson, Carlsbad
Nelson had his hands in a little bit of everything in Carlsbad’s big win over Rancho Mirage. The 6-foot-5 wing forward scored 10 points, but it was his activity on both ends that stood out the most. Nelson pulled down seven boards (three offensive and four defensive), dished out four assists, blocked three shots and snagged four steals all while committing just one turnover.
Tyson Robinson, El Camino
What stood out most about Robinson was his slashing and finishing abilities on the break. The 5-foot-11 guard scored 12 points, most of them coming in the paint, using his shiftiness and balance to knife through tight spaces, side-step defenders, and get a clean look at the basket.
