The Southern Section out-dueled the San Diego Section by a five wins to two margin. Here’s a brief breakdown of how the top 2020 prospects in the gym performed.
Austin Cook, Damien
We’ve all come to know Cook as one of the better perimeter shooters in the area, and while that fact remains intact, he showed Saturday that he’s more than just a catch-and-shoot guy. The 6-foot-4 wing scored 10 points in a win over LJCD, but made major contributions in other aspects of the game, recording nine rebounds to go along with six assists.
Bradley Ezewiro, Bishop Montgomery
Torrey Pines didn’t have the big men to match the size, strength and power finishing ability of Ezewiro. The 6-foot-8 power forward finished with 19 points on 7-for-12 from the field, while also grabbing eight rebounds. Ezewiro is at his best when establishing deep post position where he can catch, gather and finish above the rim.
Brandon Angel, Torrey Pines
Angel doesn’t get a whole lot of sets run for him on the offensive end, but he has proven himself as one of the better set shooters in Southern California. The 6-foot-6 sharpshooting wing finished with nine points in a loss to Bishop Montgomery, and surprisingly, didn’t attempt one 3-point field goal on the game.
Garrett Schaefer, Temecula Valley
The 6-foot-3 point guard didn’t start in TV’s win over El Cajon Christian, but when he did check in his impact was felt immediately. Schaefer is one of the best “pace” point guards around with his ability to control the tempo of any game with his basketball IQ. He finished with a stat-sheet-stuffing 10 points, four rebounds, four assists and five steals.
Miles Williams, El Cajon Chrisitan
Williams has some dynamic speed and playmaking abilities to his game that make him a dangerous offensive piece in a high-tempo offense like Christian has. The 5-foot-9 point guard finished with 12 points in a loss to Temecula Valley, but more importantly, he dished out a game-high seven assists, displaying good court vision in transition.
