Guy has earned the respect from Wolfpack head coach Terrance Scales to go onto the floor and be a leader.
Guy had a game-high 25 points to lead Cordova (3-3) to the 81-54 win over the MHEA Eagles Friday night on the first day of the 5th Annual Renee Scales Lupus Classic. Guy is versatile enough to play multiple positions. During the game, he was the team’s point guard, then he found himself in the post getting rebounds each time a shot went up.
Guy had a strong second quarter to help the Wolfpack put the game out of reach. He scored eight points in the quarter to help Cordova go into halftime up 46-24. The Iona commit finished 9 for 12 from the free throw line on a night he dominated from start to finish.
“This is what we’re expecting from Bruce,” Scales said. “We have a lot of sophomores that are playing. Over half of our roster are freshmen and sophomores, so with the few seniors we have, we really need them to step up, including Bruce. He really played well tonight.
“I thought his energy level was really good. I thought he did exactly what he should do, just control the paint, hit the glass, and create plays. We ask him to do a lot. He had his full game on tonight, and we really needed it.”
Guy had help from sophomore guard Jordan Hamilton, who started the game making shots. He scored nine of his 15 points from 3-point range. The Wolfpack’s defense was stellar as well, forcing MHEA’s offense into taking unwanted shots. The Eagles were keeping up with the Wolfpack until guard M. Hines’ back-to-back 3s made it 29-15.
Hines finished with 11 points. Forward J. Tyus added 10 in a balanced attack by Cordova. Friday night marked the second time in six games this season the Wolfpack have scored at least 80 points. Scales expects his team to have its highs and lows because of the youth.
“I think some nights we will score pretty well. We have guys who are capable of making shots,” Scales said. “It’s just about them being able to make shots night in and night out. Defensively, I thought the energy was pretty good.”
Cordova’s defense played pretty well. Guard S. Eubank was the only double-digit scorer for the Eagles. He finished with 13.
Cordova’s missing Hibbler
Senior forward Julian Hibbler’s playing time has been limited because he has been dealing with a blister on his foot. Coach Scales mentioned the blister has affected Hibbler’s production on the floor.
Hibbler was held out of practice for the last two days. He played in the first half of Friday night’s game. Scales didn’t like how he was moving on the floor, so he sat Hibbler on the bench in the second half.
“Hopefully, he will be ready to go tomorrow,” Scales said. “It’s been bothering him for a couple of weeks. Every time he plays on it, he reinjures it. When he takes his sock off, he has a bloody sock down at the bottom. He went to get it checked out the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, and they had him sit out for a weekend.
“So, we’re waiting to get that back, so he can get back to being 100 percent, because we really need what he brings. He’s really our best catch-and-shoot guy and he’s a 6-5 athlete, and we need that on the floor.”
