In the consolation bracket, Ruskin defeated Sumner, while Olathe South ran away from Wyandotte.
Here, Prep Hoops Kansas takes a look at several of the tournament’s top players from the Missouri side.
Javaunte Hawkins, 5’10, G, 2019, Lee’s Summit North
Hawkins is one of the KC area’s premier guards in the 2019 class and is coming off a strong offseason running with MoKan Elite’s 17U squad. He is quick off the dribble, gets into the lane at will and can knock down perimeter shots. He can create 3-pointers off the bounce, has a nice mid-range game and is an explosive player in transition.
Mikel Henderson, 6’0, PG, 2019, Lee’s Summit North
Henderson is an underrated point guard prospect out of KC armed with the ability to handle the ball, create off the dribble and shows the ability to finish around the basket in traffic. Henderson is a solid defender and uses his size, length and quickness well, and shows good court vision at the offensive end of the court as well.
Deon McCarthy, 6’2, PF, 2020, Ruskin
Don’t be fooled by McCarthy’s listed 6’2 height, he plays much bigger than that, and on Thursday, he was a force in the paint. He scored 16 points in the first half thanks in part to a parade to the free throw line. He has along arms and a strong, wide base and likes to mix it up in the paint, playing an old school brand of basketball. He posts up, works hard on the offensive glass and draws fouls. He finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds in the game.
Reggie Morris, 6’1, G, 2020, Grandview
Morris had a big third quarter that helped Grandview briefly make a game of things against Lawrence in Thursday’s semifinal contest. He knocked down three 3-pointers and scored 11 points in the frame and had a fourth 3-pointer in the third quarter waved off after an illegal screen. He is effective pressuring the ball and being a pest at the head of the Grandview press and helped force several turnovers during a key stretch in the third.
DeAndre Sorrells, 5’10, G, 2019, Grandview
Known for his outside shooting, Sorrells showed on Thursday he is an all-around guard capable of handling the point, setting the pace and tempo and providing solid rebounding as well. He finished with 17 points and added a team-high seven rebounds. Sorrells is handling much of the point guard duties this season and showed off a nice mid-range pull-up game as he takes advantage of teams overplaying him on the 3-point arc.
