Rancho Christian won the BattleZONE championship with a 56-54 win over host Corona Centennial. USC-bound forward Isaiah Mobley took home MVP honors for the Eagles.
Here are the Second Five performers from the event.
Camren Pierce, Etiwanda
If Etiwanda is going to crack the eight team Open Division field this season, Pierce will be the reason why. The 6-foot junior point guard does it all for the Eagles as the team’s best scorer, most important perimeter defender and guy who leads the youthful squad. Pierce scored 18 points Friday against St. Bernard and added 12 in a 63-59 overtime win over Foothills Christian.
Paris Dawson, Corona Centennial
Dawson is probably the least touted star on the Huskies’ roster because his numbers don’t jump off the page, but his contributions go well beyond the box score. The 6-foot-1 junior is one of the more active and tough on-ball defenders in SoCal and he always seems to be in the mix for loose balls. Dawson is a good decision-maker in transition and knows when to slow the fast-paced tempo of Corona Centennial and set up half-court offense.
DJ Davis, Corona Centennial
Davis was on fire during the first half of the championship game against Corona Centennial, scoring 24 points, including six 3-pointers in the first half. Rancho Christian made some good defensive adjustments in the second half and held Davis to just two points after the break. Davis continues to show why he’s one of the more explosive scorers in SoCal.
Tory San Antonio, Rancho Verde
The Cal State Fullerton-bound wing combines with teammate Jaxen Turner to form one of the top backcourts in the Southland. San Antonio scored 13 points in a semifinal loss to Corona Centennial before dropping 30 in the Mustangs’ triple overtime loss to Chino Hills.
Makur Maker, Orange Lutheran
Maker’s impact for the Lancers can be summed up in two games. He didn’t play Friday in a 77-58 loss to Foothills Christian, then dropped 35 points Saturday in Orange Lutheran’s 83-50 blowout of St. Bernard. Maker, who is pushing 6-feet-11, is an extremely skilled and versatile big who can score on the block, but also step out on the perimeter and hit 3-pointers or break down his defensive match-up off the dribble.
