Continue ReadingMany expected this season to be a down year for Allen since they lost four of their five starters from last year’s state championship team. The Eagles were the #17 pre-seasoned ranked team in the state because of this. However, they are proving to be just as good or maybe even better than they were last year. The Eagles are currently ranked the second best team in the state for 6A and they are likely finish out the regular season in that position if they continue to play the way they have been.
Allen is led by Colorado State signee and returning starting point guard Isaiah Stevens. Stevens is doing everything a coach would want him to do at the point guard spot and more. He has already led his team to the McDonald’s Texas Invitational Championship after beating Richardson J.J. Pearce. There is where he earned Tournament MVP after a 22-point performance in the win. Yesterday, he helped lead his team to the Curtis Culwell Invitational championship after beating Richardson J.J. Pearce in a rematch. The Eagles defeated Mustangs 62-59 in the game. Stevens did not perform as well as he usually does, but he finished with 10 points and dished out a few assists. However, a couple of his state-ranked teammates definitely played a key role in the championship victory:
Korey Jones / 6’2″ / SG / Allen / 2019
Korey Jones is another key returner from last year’s championship squad and was Allen’s best performer Saturday night. The senior guard got off to a great start, scoring 13 first half points. He knocked down threes off the catch and penetrated to comfortable spots within the paint to knock down short jumpers. Jones’ play was key in Allen building a comfortable lead over Pearce early. The unsigned senior led the Eagles in scoring with 20 points.
Manny Obaseki / 6’3″ / SG / Allen / 2019
Manny Obaseki played big on both ends for the Eagles. He made a few mistakes offensively being lackadaisical with the rock. But, he made up for his mistakes by playing the passing lanes well and intercepting passes to retrieve the ball back. The sophomore is more than just a wing with elite bounce. He also is a secondary ball handler who can attack and score off the dribble. Manny was aggressive in drawing fouls and finished out the game with 13 points.
