Here, Prep Hoops takes a look at several players who stood out at Saturday’s event.
Ben Bryant, 6’5, F, 2019, Raytown
Also a football standout, Bryant is a strong, athletic forward who likes to mix it up in the paint, but can also step away from the basket and knock down outside shots. Bryant muscled up against Blue Valley big man Siler Tschirhart throughout much of Saturday’s contest at the defensive end of the floor, and at the offensive end brought a big motor and the ability to move without the basketball and get on the offensive boards.
Javaunte Hawkins, 5’11, G, 2019, Lee’s Summit North
Hawkins is a skilled guard who combines terrific speed, quickness and the ability to score from all over the floor. He has deep range on his outside shot and is tough to contain off the dribble. He is an early contender for KC Player of the Year awards and is a big part of the Broncos’ early season success.
Mikel Henderson, 6’0, G, 2019, Lee’s Summit North
While Hawkins has received much of the attention of Lee’s Summit North, Henderson has emerged as a college prospect and one of the KC area’s premier guards in his own right. He is a quality point guard who can handle the ball, lead a team and get the Broncos’ in its offensive sets, but can also attack the basket, shoot from the outside and defend at a high level.
Aubrey Martin, 6’0, G, 2019, Raytown
Martin is a strong guard who surprises opponents with his quickness with the ball and ability to create offense for himself and his team. He is strong getting to the basket, can shoot off the dribble and competes at both ends of the floor. Martin put together a strong performance on Saturday against Blue Valley and showed why he is one of the KC area’s most underrated guards this season.
Deandre Sorrells, 5’10, G, 2019, Grandview
Sorrells entered Saturday’s game shooting an impossible 60 percent from 3-point range this season, going 19 for 31 through the first six games, firmly establishing himself as one of the state’s premier shooters. Against Blue Valley Northwest, he knocked down three 3-pointers, including one on a set play late in the con test that gave Grandview a late lead they would not relinquish. He handles the ball, can run the point and is a smart, heady player.
