5A Sonoran Overview: Standings & Standouts
We are a good portion of away through the season and I think it is time to look at some region standings and discuss what the potential future may look like for these regions/teams. Here is the 5A Sonoran Overview:
Standings: As of 12/9/18
1. Mountain View Marana 0-0 (Region) 2-0 (Conference) 4-1 (Overall)
2. Cholla 0-0 (Region) 1-1 (Conference) 5-1 (Overall)
3. Rincon 0-0 (Region) 1-3 (Conference) 2-4 (Overall)
4. Empire 0-0 (Region) 0-1 (Conference) 1-5 (Overall)
5. Flowing Wells 0-0 (Region) 0-2 (Conference) 1-5 (Overall)
6. Desert View 0-0 (Region) 0-2 (Conference) 0-6 (Overall)
Top Players:
Julian Molina (Mountain View): I was very interested to see how Julian Molina would lead his team without the help of his co-partner Drew Cotton. So far, he’s done a great job and I’m really impressed with his play. He is a candidate for player of the year.
Khalid Whitaker (Flowing Wells): This kid has been on an absolute scoring run lately. He simply cannot be stopped from scoring. His team may be struggling, but he is definitely putting on a great shooting display each and every night.
Ruben Casarez (Cholla): Ruben won freshman of the year last season and I feel like he has been forgotten due to an injury that left him sidelines all AAU season. However, he is back and better than ever. Ruben should be talked about more than he is.
Projection
This region is a toss up. I think it comes down to Mountain View and Cholla at the end. However, if I had to pick one, I think I would pick Mountain View to edge out Cholla for the region. I think Julian Molina will carry them all season long and will end up as player of the year for the region.
