5 Overachieving Teams
1. American Fork (7-0)
It is unbelievable to even fathom the fact that American Fork only won 11 games last year and missed the playoffs. Partly because we have a horrid system that only takes four teams per region but mainly because of their inconsistent play. The new and improved Cavemen have more grit and selfish play that has allowed them to currently be undefeated and a Top 3 team in the state. Isaac Johnson is playing well along with Hayden Franson, Tanner Cuff and Trey Stewart. We predict that AF will have a minimum of 19 wins this season before the playoffs get underway.
2. Woods Cross (6-1)
Woods Cross has already reached it’s win total they had a season ago. Improved play from Tyler Roberts, Jake Howe and company are a big reason why WX will make the playoffs. A new coaching staff and a new re-found desire to compete has the Wildcats playing great. We anticipate a 14 win season at minimum. Both Tyler and Jake have an opportunity to play at the collegiate level with continued improvement.
3. Green Canyon (6-1)
Last season Green Canyon only managed to win 6 games and they have reached that mark now. They could’ve surpassed that mark but suffered a heartbreaking last second loss to Fremont. This team is a dark horse team in 4A as they are quick and have a dynamic player in Carter Berish. Look for Green Canyon to reach 14 wins this season as well. Carter would be a great player in the NWAC.
4. Brighton (5-1)
A six win Brighton team last year that underachieved has already reached 5 wins. This year we think they could hit 13 wins. They will have to sneak a win or two if they want to have playoff aspirations. Luc Krystowiak is averaging 17 points per game. Don’t be surprised if they get past Alta and Cottonwood for the last playoff spot. Luc might end up at the University of Utah for obvious reasons but he would be a great player at a school like Westminster.
5. Maple Mountain (4-2)
Maple Mountain only won 5 games last year and this year they are playing a lot better. They have 4 wins with a tough loss on the road to Juan Diego and Westlake. Maple Mountain will make the playoffs thanks to the emergence of Braxton Tanner who is averaging 22 points per game. Look for Maple Mountain to hit the 15 win mark before the start of the playoffs. Braxton is a multi-position player. Many may pass on him at the D2 level because he lacks that raw athleticism, but Braxton can play. He would be a great find for a school that can use him at the 3.
