4A Kino Overview: Standings & Standouts
We are a good portion of away through the season and I think it is time to look at some region standings and discuss what the potential future may look like for these regions/teams. Here is the 4A Kino Overview:
Standings: As of 12/9/18
1. Salpointe Catholic 0-0 (Region) 1-0 (Conference) 3-0 (Overall)
2. Canyon Del Oro 0-0 (Region) 1-0 (Conference) 4-2 (Overall)
3. Catalina Foothills 0-0 (Region) 1-1 (Conference) 4-2 (Overall)
4. Sahuaro 0-0 (Region) 1-1 (Conference) 3-3 (Overall)
5. Casa Grande 0-0 (Region) 0-3 (Conference) 2-4 (Overall)
6. Vista Grande 0-0 (Region) 0-3 (Conference) 0-5 (Overall)
Top Players:
Evan Nelson (Salpointe Catholic): Nelson is half of the dynamic duo that Salpointe lives through. This pairing is a match-up nightmare for opponents. Nelson is very quick and shifty, while having a great shot. He can explode for a scoring outburst at any minute.
Majok Deng (Salpointe Catholic): The same can be said for Majok. He has the skill to go for 20-30 any given night. He is big, strong, and moves very well for his size. He also has a terrific looking jump shot and is lethal from deep.
Carson James (Catalina Foothills): How can we talk about shooters and not mention this guy? He is a pure marksmen from three and is also very quick, which allows him to get into the paint usually for a floater and nice mid-range jumpshot.
Projection
While CDO is currently in 2nd place, I think the region is ultimately decided between Salpointe and Catalina Foothills. There is just too much fire power on those squads for CDO to handle. However, I will admit that new coach Jason Apodaca looks like he will have the program running nicely very soon. In the end, I think Salpointe wins the region and player of the year will be decided between Nelson and Deng, with Nelson barely sneaking past Deng.
