Continue ReadingChristmas tournaments start tonight and teams are going to be playing a large number of games over the next few weeks as we head into 2019 and inch closer to the Sweet Sixteen in March. Here’s a look at the teams and players trending up right now and who is trending down right now.
3 Up:
- Clay County – Not much was expected from the Tigers this season but they’re off to a 7-0 start including winning the WYMT Mountain Classic and wins over Boyle County and Lexington Catholic. After a few down years, Clay is off to a great start and being led by Sophomore Connor Robinson who is having a big time year, averaging 22 points per game.
- Allen County – Scottsville – The Patriots are off to a hot start at 7-1 with the lone blemish being a two point loss in overtime. They have 3 players averaging double figures in Brett Rippy, Owen Stamper and Mason Shirley. It’s been a long time since you look at the 4th region standings and see ACS on top but that’s where they are right now.
- Danville – The Admirals are off to a perfect 6-0 start with crucial wins over West Jessamine and Wayne County. After being an also ran for the last few years, a talented Danville team is winning the big games and in the driver’s seat to win the 12th region. Dante Hayden, Darrian Bell, DeShaud St. Martin and Zach Thornton are all averaging double figures for the Ads and the fact that they are winning close games early this season bodes well for their success long term.
3 Down:
- Mercer County – Life after Trevon Faulkner is harder than the Titans may have expected. Sitting at 2-5 heading into Christmas tournaments, they have dropped 4 of their five losses by double figures. If it weren’t for Senior Carter Baughman they would likely be sitting at 0-7 as the rest of the team really struggles to score the ball. They have games against Rockcastle County and Lincoln County this week as they try to get things turned around.
- Floyd Central – The well documented controversy with their coach being accused of bullying players and his eventual suspension has left the Jaguars at 2-7 overall and with 5 8th graders on the roster in place of the 8 players who left the team. Basically the wheels have fallen off at Floyd Central and they’ve lost 7 of their last 8 with their lone win being over the lowly Piarist School. They have some games coming up where they will do well to be even a little competitive.
- Lafayette – The Generals have dropped 5 out of 6 and lost to Scott County by 55 last night in a game that wasn’t even competitive. After beating Lincoln County and Madison Central by double figures to start the season, Lafayette needs to find their way this week at Mercer County and get back on the winning track.
