Stock Up:
- Manual’s Eli Roberts – I have been critical of Eli in the past for showing a lack of motor. As a kid who really passes the eye test with good size and ability, Roberts was a frustrating evaluation because you want him to be consistently good as he shows flashes of being. That time may have finally arrived for the Manual Junior. He is shooting above 70% from the field and having a huge impact on games.
- South Oldham’s Luke Morrison – The 6’5 Junior Wing has broken out in a big way this season. Averaging 23.4 points and 7 rebounds per game after 6 games while shooting an incredible 61% from the field and 60% from 3 while making nearly 4 per game. More importantly, the Dragons are off to a 5-1 start and look to be a factor in the 8th region this year after not a ton was expected from them headed into the season.
- Taylor County’s Trevon Smith – In a 24 hour period this weekend, Smith added 3 Junior College Scholarship offers. Smith is off to a terrific start for a Taylor team that has already eclipsed it’s win total from last season. Tre is averaging 26 points and 9 rebounds per game while putting up shooting splits of 55/37/74 and being a leader for a team that needed on when it’s coach resigned two weeks before the season.
Stock Down:
- Glasgow – Why would a team with a 4-2 record be on the stock down list? Because the only two losses were bad ones to the two teams they will have to beat if they’re going to make it to Rupp Arena in March. The Scotties lost 92-38 to Bowling Green then fell to Warren Central 84-62 6 days later. Glasgow has a lot of talent and one of their best teams in years but if they can’t beat the two powerhouses from Bowling Green, they won’t be able to get to the Sweet Sixteen.
- Teams in Nelson County – Bardstown is 1-4 out of the gate, Bethlehem is 1-5, Nelson County is 0-6 and Thomas Nelson is the outlier at 3-2. However you look at it, basketball season is not off to the greatest of starts in Nelson County. There is still plenty of time for it to turn around and Bardstown, in particular, still has high expectations for the year ahead but all 4 schools will need to show improvement and growth as the season rolls along.
- Apollo – In March Apollo made the Sweet Sixteen with a losing record. If they’re getting back to Rupp Arena this season it looks like it may be with a losing record again. Off to a 1-6 start this season, the Eagles have lost all 6 games by double figures and took a 35 point loss to Warren East on Saturday. Coach Barker is a really good coach and is likely to get the season turned around by February but the start of the year has not gone according to plan.
