2020 Dream Team
This is the second installment of the dream team series. The same rules apply, what 12 players would make an Alabama roster to compete on the national stage? This was more challenging than the 2019 Dream Team for a couple reasons: 1) Point guard depth is growing in the class, 2) Perimeter heavy class, and 3) Lack of bigs in the class.
Starters
Tommy Murr (Lindsey Lane): You’d be crazy to leave the nation’s leading score at home. Murr has solid size for the point guard position at 6’0-6’1, natural scoring ability, and can even slide to the 2 in small lineups.
Jayden Stone (Sacred Heart): Stone is the best player in the class. He’s athletic, can score at all the levels, and is super competitive. Stone has something other players do not have. At 6’3 Stone can play both the 1 and 2. Stone is dynamic.
Austin Harvell (East Limestone): Harvell is one of the better athletes in the class. At 6’6 he can play multiple positions. He can play above the rim, and Harvell has a smooth stroke. Austin is a matchup problem for all defenders.
Dallas Howell (Enterprise): Howell gets the nod to start at the 4. Howell is a 6’6-6’7 hybrid forward who can do a little bit of everything. He doesn’t need the ball to impact the game. Dallas is an underrated athlete.
Cameron Boozer (Lanett): At 6’9, Boozer would be our rim protector. He rebounds well, doesn’t need plays called for him, and Cameron is athletic enough to finish above the rim.
Bench
Colby Jones (Mountain Brook): Jones is the first perimeter off the bench. He is 6’5, super smooth with the ball, and sneaky athletic. Jones is a team player, and Colby knows how to play and could play 1-3.
Rongie Gordon (Sindey Lanier): Gordon is a top five talent in the class. At 6’8, Gordon would play 4-5. He’s an athletic forward who is hard to keep off the glass. Gordon also has ball skill to play away from the basket.
Kam Woods (Pinson Valley): Woods puts on a show every time he hits the floor. He is a very talented and gifted scorer. Woods would back up the point guard spot, but could also play the 2.
Antwan Burnett (Sidney Lanier): Burnett is one of the best athletes in the class. He’s at his best attacking the rim, but can knock down open threes as well. He has the size (6’4) and athleticism to play and defend multiple positions.
Zondrick Garrett (Oxford): Garrett is another hybrid forward who has enough ball skill and athleticism to play both the 3 and the 4. Zondrick is a very good defender, and an underrated passer.
Cole Larue (McGill-Toolen): Larue is a skilled big. He’s not the best athlete, but his size (6’8) and skill set make him a tough matchup at the 5.
Paul Stramaglia (Mountain Brook): Stramaglia is a point guard who loves moving the ball. He is a team player and is not afraid to do the dirty work. He knows how to win.
Making a team like this is not about having the best 12 overall players on a team. I think this group would be very hard to beat, and every roster spot fits well together. This team would be under sized, athletic, and extremely dynamic on offense. This team features natural scoring ability and multi-positional players.
