Carroll kept the game close up until halftime but in the second half the talent of St. John’s prevailed them to get a 77-54 road win to start the season off 1-0 in the WCAC this year. Here are the 10 best from the game.
Best Overall Performance | 2021 Devon Savage | St. John’s College High School
I wanted to save and use Devon as best player off the bench but his play was too good, he had to be mentioned at the top. Savage finished with 13 points and 6 rebounds. He had a couple blocks and a steal too. Savage is a sophomore that is listed at 6’5 and has a good amount of muscle on him. Last night he played like a season veteran and I expect his recruitment to jump if he keeps on happening performances like this.
Best Offensive Performance | 2020 Ishmael Leggett | St. John’s College High School
This is the second time this year that Ishmael has put on the best offense performance for St. John’s this year. He has been getting past his defenders at will and hitting shots down from all over the court. He’s efficient too when shooting the ball which is something that has really impressed. It is getting to a point where whenever he goes up for a shot, I am telling myself “well there are points for St. John’s”.
Best Defender | 2019 Casey Morsell | St. John’s College High School
Casey Morsell has been playing great defense quite some time but last night after 2020 Cory Barnes got off to a fast start, the Virginia commit locked Cory down in the second half which prevailed the Cadets to start pulling away from Carroll.
Best Performance On Archbishop Carroll | 2020 Cory Barnes | Archbishop Carroll
Cory got off to a really fast start for Carroll and was keeping them in the game for a bunch of the first half, but as I mentioned above, Casey Morsell locked him down in the second half but before that, Barnes had 16 points and was really in control with the ball for Carroll. He stands at 6’3 with a big body and is always looking to score. I would like to see more low majors get involved with him.
Best Under The Radar Performance | 2020 Darius Maddox | St. John’s College High School
Darius finished with 12 points for St. John’s in the win last night. He was finishing at the rim and connected when he was in transition. He sat down, got in players face’s on defense which led to a good defense performance. Right now I feel like Darius is flying a little bit under the radar on this team but he won’t be soon after nice performances like last night.
Best Underclassmen Performance: 2022 Trey Thomas | Archbishop Carroll
Trey Thomas is still young but he is going to be a name to remember for Carroll. He finished with 11 points last night with one deep three. He had a few running floaters and is not afraid to go at his defenders to get to the bucket. He displayed some nice passing abilities and good defense too.
Best Play | 2020 Cory Barnes | Archbishop Carroll
Barnes hit a desperation heave from quite some feet behind the three point line at the buzzer of the shot clock in the 1st quarter. This was a huge play for Carroll as they were in this game during a lot of the first half.
Best Shooter | 2019 Devon Dunn | St. John’s College High School
The Fairleigh Dickinson commit has been shooting the ball very well in the two times I have seen St. John’s play this year and he was continuing it again last night. This is a guy that you do not want to leave open because he has a lot of confidence in his shot and will make you pay for it if you leave him open. I have loved what I have seen from Dunn early on this year.
Best Rebounder | 2020 Tegra Izay | Archbishop Carroll
The 6’10 junior tallied 9 rebounds which should not come as a surprise as he was the tallest guy on the court. We predicted that Izay might finish under this category from last night and expect him to show up here again throughout the season.
Best Story Watching Moving Forward:
Last night was one of the best performances I have seen St. John’s play in the past two years. With that being said, the talent on this team might allow the Cadets to creep up higher in the standings this year in the tough WCAC conference. I was really impressed with everyone on the team as everyone was able to touch the floor.
