We look at the 10 best from this game here:
Patterson’s MVP: ’19 Marvin Price
Price wasn’t the leading scorer for Patterson, but he impacted the game in multiple ways. The 6-foot-5 wing finished with 21 points and nine rebounds. The majority of his buckets came from inside the paint and off of offensive rebounds. It was Price’s presence at the high post that opened up the flood gates for their guards to have free reign at three’s.
Aberdeen’s MVP: ’19 Jayquan Hayes
There was very little positivity to take from this one for Aberdeen, but Hayes led the way with eight points, including two triples. The 5-foot-6 guard did what he could to break the full court pressure of Patterson, and although he turned it over on multiple occasions, he also found open teammates for eventual assists. Despite the lopsided score, Hayes continued to remain positive in his interactions with teammates, which says something about his character.
Best Offensive Performance: ’20 Zack Blackwell (Patterson)
Blackwell led all scorers as he exploded for 31 points. Earlier as a stated when Price was forcing the defense to sink in due to his presence at the high post allowed Blackwell to have target practice from deep. Blackwell sunk seven three’s, all of which were out of catch-and-shoot scenarios. He also was the beneficiary of lay ups in the open floor because of Aberdeen’s alarming turnover rate.
Best Defensive Performance: ’20 Zack Blackwell (Patterson)
Blackwell gets awarded best defensive performance because of his constant pressure on the ball. Patterson plays a helter-skelter trap defense that speeds the opposing team to an uncomfortable pace. Blackwell picked the pockets of Aberdeen’s guards and stepped in to passing lanes consistently and provided the Clippers with endless transition opportunities.
Best Rebounder: ’19 Marvin Price (Patterson)
Price wasn’t the biggest player on the floor, but it’s the way in which he plays that makes him seem much taller than he is listed. He uses his body in a way during the halfcourt possession to get in the best position for the miss. Defensively, he acts as more of an anchor, so he’s already by the hoop, but if there’s ever a tie up between he and another player, Price is going to come up with it.
Best Player Off The Bench: ’20 Joe Jones (Patterson)
Jones can off the bench and supplied great energy for the frontcourt. The 6-foot-5 junior doesn’t demand the ball, but scored four of his six points last night by finding open seams in Aberdeen’s back line for lay ups. Having Jones come off the bench and provide immediately sent a message to Aberdeen that no matter who the Clippers put in the game, it was going to be a long night.
Best Passer: ’20 TJ Thomas (Patterson)
Thomas felt the flow of this game and knew that Price and Blackwell had the hot hands. As a result, he settled in his floor general role and created open looks for not only those two, but the entire team. Not only did he finish with six assists, but the future Mt. Zion Prep guard also had six steals, five points and five rebounds to complete a well-rounded outing.
Best Underclassmen: ’22 John Thomas (Patterson)
Thomas continues to get a feel for the speed and physicality of the varsity level and play within his skill set. The 6-foot-4 freshman doesn’t settle for jumpers when he gets the ball on the perimeter. He slashes into the heart of the defense and makes solid reads in terms of when to pass out and when to finish strong.
Best Play: ’19 Jalen Willis (Patterson)
Willis had three steals of his own last night, and one of them led to the play of the game where he rose up and threw down a thunderous one-handed dunk that sent the crowd in a frenzy. The 6-foot-4 bulldozing guard has been a great addition thus far and put together a stat line of eight points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Looking forward for both teams:
Patterson wants to keep sending statements in their games throughout this week. They’ll face off against Southwestern this evening followed by Edmonson and City to end the week. Aberdeen returns to Harford County play and will take on Fallston, Havre De Grace and Harford Tech.
