Tuesday’s Daily Dive: Carmel’s Big Win, HSE’s Statement, Silver Creek Flexes
Last night was the first full night of action and there was plenty to dive into on a Tuesday night. With Carmel’s big win over Zionsville, HSE making a statement, and Silver Creek flexes their muscles. All that and more in Tuesday’s Daily Dive.
Carmel’s Big Win
Last night, we got to check in on the Carmel win over Zionsville and there was a lot to take away from it. First off, Carmel is a legit 4A State contender as they are loaded with players and depth. Having a freshman in Peter Suder be able to start and give them production right off the bat is huge. He’s right in line with Andrew Owens style of play, a guy that can rebound, defend, and finish inside. Owens has that perimeter threat but having them both on the floor opens up a lot of offensive options.
Carmel struggled a ton with Zionsville when they started to attack in the second half and were sloppy with their fouls. That will have to get cleaned up but they probably won’t see many teams that big across the board.
Zionsville, while really talented on paper, has one glaring issue. They don’t have any guards. Isaiah Thompson is the guy but only Ben Weidner and Jake Ritter are the other guards on the roster and those two combined for just two points. Thompson finished with 16 but half of that came way too late and he struggled most of the night. If they are going to make the run they should this year, they will need someone to step up and give some semblance of depth in their backcourt.
Hamilton Southeastern’s Statement
Hamilton Southeastern has always had talent, usually one of the most loaded teams. However, they really have struggled to advance in the postseason. This might be one of their better chances to get through and make that deep run and last night’s 95-50 win over a solid Muncie Central team was hopefully a statement.
Led by Landon Morris, 16 points and 10 rebounds, and Chris Grubbs, 13 points and 10 rebounds, they have two wings that showed their production. Landon Morris stepping up is key because now they have some more depth with Aaron Etherington on the wing. Pair those guys with Mabor Majak down low and Noah Smith on the ball and hopefully they have enough offense. Smith isn’t a big scoring guard and neither is Majak a massive producer and those two have to play so having three wings that can score really helps.
Not sure if this will be the year after having just seen Carmel last night but at some point the law of averages says they should probably win big at some point. Lets see how the seasons go from here on out.
Silver Creek Flexes
The thought heading into the season was that Silver Creek could be a very, very good team in 3A this year. On paper they have some really good guys but until this point only really senior guard Zane Gross has shown the production at the high school level.
Sophomores Trey Kaufman and Kooper Jacobi had solid freshman seasons and both were really good during the summer but that doesn’t necessarily translate to high school performance. But last night Kaufman had 17 points and 15 rebounds and Jacobi had 18 points and 7 rebounds. Pair that with Gross’ 17 points and that is a lot of offense and kind of what you had hoped to see this team be able to put together as they blew out Henryville 82-39.
This season is still brand new and this performance is singular right now but it was about as good of a first performance as you could have hoped for. A few more and people around the state might start buying in.
Emptying The Notebook:
- Anderson pulled out a big win over Pendleton Heights. This is a key win because of the location and Madison County tie but also from a standpoint of Anderson finally having some substantial talent and continuity to their coaching staff.
- Trayce Jackson-Davis started his run at Mr. Basketball last night as he pulled up with 29 points and 8 rebounds in a Center Grove win over Franklin Community.
- Edgewood pulled off a huge win over Bloomington South, 62-56. It was their first win over Bloomington South since 2007. Trevor Taylor led Edgewood with 16 points. Per Jon Blau the Herald Times, Bloomington South was just 1/17 from 3 in the game.
- Freshman guard Kyle Thomas of Cloverdale scored 22 points in a close loss to Terre Haute South. He should become the face of Cloverdale quickly. Father played at Indiana State.
- Senior guard Brian Miller hit a game-winner at the buzzer for Southport to beat rival Perry Meridian to give head coach Eric Brand his first win at the Southside program. Junior guard Brevin Jefferson led the team with 16 points.
- Cathedral and Armaan Franklin got their season started off well with a 78-67 win over Indianapolis Howe. Cathedral is looking for a 4A State title and has a 1-0 start. Franklin is also looking at Mr. Basketball and put up 29 points, 13 rebounds, and 4 steals.
- Purdue was in the building to watch Evansville Bosse’s Kiyron Powell. Bosse beat Evansville North 79-72 as Powell finished with 10 points in the win.
- Logansport got a win over Peru, 94-50. Senior guard Sam Skaggs went off for 40 points, 9 assists, and 4 steals shooting 8/12 from three in the win.
- Sophomore guard Luke Brown went for 29 points in a win for Blackford over Cowan. He got held back last year with an injury but could set some records this season.
- Lawrence Central beat Fishers, 73-58. Fishers kept it close for a while but LC put four guys in double-figures last night led by Jacob Laravia with 18 points.
- Westview got one of the more lopsided victories I have ever seen as they beat Bethany Christian 81-7. No, not a typo. Westview’s style will cause offensive issues for teams but this will be one of the more extreme versions of it.
