The Season Opens Today: What to Watch
The boys basketball season gets underway as most Utah teams will open their season today and tomorrow. We will be looking at some intriguing games these next two days.
Tuesday, November 20th
Lone Peak vs. Timpanogos
Timpanogos is coming off of a 20 win season and will look to sharp shooter Matt Norman to pace them in their high uptempo style of play. Lone Peak on the other hand is a bit of a question mark. The Knights have a new coach and fairly unknowns have taken the reigns. What we do know is that Lone Peak will compete with anyone regardless of who they have on the team.
American Fork vs. Layton
This summer we watched Coach Cuff break in his new team in American Fork and they did look a lot different. With a roster full of talent we are excited to see Isaacc Johnson (Oregon), Trey Stewart (UVU), and Tanner Cuff gel this season. Layton will be undersized but then again most teams are against AF. Intrigued to see how Collin Jeppson against all of AF’s height.
Wednesday, November 21st
Pleasant Grove vs. Aurora Christian (IL)
Pleasant Grove will have their hands full with Aurora Christian (IL) as they have three top tier players. Class of 2020 6’6 SF Will Wolfe who is a Top 20 talent in the state of Illinois along with Taaj Davis and Calvin Hartley. The Vikings will need big games from Matt Van Komen (Utah) and Casey Brown (BYU).
Orem vs. Herriman
Fresh off of a Football State Championship Orem’s back-court will be tested immediately. Puka Nacua (USC) and Ethan Slade (both football players) will match-up against JL Vaughn and big fella Kase Peterson. Herriman will also be playing under a new coach (Scott Briggs), who informed the team that he will be taking another job after the conclusion of the season. A lot of story lines in this one.
Wasatch Academy vs. Layton Christian Academy
The Tigers start their GEICO National Championship run. The talent that they have top to bottom is impressive. Two players that are under the radar that you should take notice of is Freshman Jaxon Kohler, the kid is crafty and is long at 6’8 and Junior PG Mike Saunders is a dog and has a motor. These are there under the radar players. Layton Christian will rely heavily on Lino Saez.
Other Notable Games:
Juan Diego vs. Salem Hills
Syracuse vs. Woods Cross
Park City vs. Taylorsville
