State Farm Classic @ Stall HS
Prep Hoops on Saturday took in the games at Stall HS in Charleston. The State Farm Classic featured 7 teams from the Chucktown area and Broome HS out of Spartanburg.
Region foes Academic Magnet vs Hanahan HS started off the day in the 7th place game. The Academic Magnet Raptors held on to defeat the Hawks 49-44. The Raptors to (1-2) on the season while Hawks fall to (0-3).
The Raptors were led in scoring Finn Gottlieb with 16 points. Hanahan HS was led in scoring by Richard Horry with 14 points.
Hanahan HS guard Logan Ammons (2019) didn’t play in the game after finishing up on the gridiron the evening before. Ammons recorded 5 interceptions and 60 tackles this season as a strong safety. Ammons has yet to ever play a game for the Hawks since transferring in last season. Ammons sat out last season after getting hurt. Ammons told Prep Hoops he will play for the Hawks his 1st time this coming Tuesday.
Northwood Academy held off a scrappy Broome HS Centurions team from the Upstate 59-56. The Chargers based out of Summerville were led in scoring by Caleb Houston with 21 points and Tyvon Berry chipped in with 12 points.
Khalil Stringer (2019) fresh off a 37 point game in round 2 of the State Farm Classic scored 22 points. Logan King added 15 points and Adam Comer (2021) chipped in with 6 points and 12 rebounds.
Game 3 of the day featured SCISA rivals Pinewood Prep vs Porter Gaud. This game was ugly all day long as Pinewood Prep led just 19-16 at halftime. The Porter Gaud Cyclones winners of the past 3 SCISA AAA State Championships have the #1 in the 2019 Palmetto State Class in Josiah James. James has signed to play at Tennessee next season.
The Cyclones would prevail 57-53 over the Panthers in the overtime victory. James led the way with 29 points and some crisp passes along the way for the Cyclones. Chase Cannon (2020) started off the day with a quick 8 points and never scored again. The Cyclones move to (2-1) on the season.
Pinewood Prep was led by small shooting guard Josh Higuchi with 20 points. Higuchi connected on several 3 pointers throughout the day. Ja-Saun Pryor and Cohen Gaskins both added 13 points apiece for the Panthers.
The nightcap featured rivals the Goose Creek HS Gators vs Stall HS Warriors. The Gators jumped out to a 16-2 lead in the 1st quarter. Stall HS post player Seth Rivers picked up his 4th foul at 3:27 mark of the first quarter. Rivers would later foul out and not even score in the game. The Gators would prevail 65-56 to claim the State Farm Classic.
Goose Creek HS (3-0) on the season were led in scoring by Jamel McGowan with 22 points. Shakarian Nelson added 15 points and Yaturi Bolton chipped in with 10 points.
The Warriors dug a hole early and never could get back in the game with the stingy Gators defense causing problems. The Warriors were led by Romello Grant with 17 points and Jalen Bailey added 15 points. The Warriors fall to (2-1) on the young season.
