Ryse Williams Pac Shores: Day 1 Standouts
REDONDO UNION, CA—The Ryse Williams Pac Shores Tournament was the place to be as the 2018-19 high school season tipped off in stellar fashion. Ziaire Williams, who sits comfortably at No. 2 out west behind Evan Mobley, exhibited the type of skill set that has him in a tug-of-war recruiting battle from East to West. UCLA-bound Jake Kyman put on a scintillating shooting display while fellow teammate and USC-bound Max Agbonkpolo slashed his way for a number of impressive finishes.
Jake Kyman (Santa Margarita)
2019, WF, 6-foot-7, 205 pounds
Joel’s Take: The UCLA commit started the season off with a bang as he had his potent jump shooting stroke on display. Whether it be off the catch or pull-ups in transition his shot is feathery smoooth. While being closed out at times Kyman had a chance to show off his basketball IQ by delivering timely passes to open teammates.
Ziaire Williams (Sherman Oaks/Notre Dame)
2020, WF, 6-foot-8, 195 pounds
Joel’s Take: Williams continues to show why he is widely considered the No. 2 prospect out west, regardless of class, only behind fellow classmate Evan Mobley. Williams point forward skills were on display as well as his much-improved jump shot. His passing and overall decision making was impeccable and snatched 11 rebounds despite his slight frame.
Hansen Clarke (Washington Prep)
2019, 6-foot, 155 pounds
Joel’s Take: This willowy point guard type was the catalyst in the Generals win over St. Anthony. He shows a nice burst off the dribble, a nifty handle, and he can knock in the clutch jump shot. The duo of Clarke and fellow senior Noel Scott is one of the more underrated back courts in So-Cal.
Max Agbonkpolo (Santa Margarita)
2019, WF, 6-foot-9, 195 pounds
Joel’s Take: One of the knocks on Agbonkpolo heading into his senior campaign was his decison making as he had a tendency to force the issue off the dribble. However, in his team’s dominant win over Serra, Agbonkpolo handed out a number of timely assists to go along with his scoring package off the dribble.
Joshua Jones (Lynwood)
2019, WF, 6-foot-7, 195 pounds
Joel’s Take: The length, quickness, and passing ability are evident, but the game needs to slow down for Jones. He can play all three positions out on the perimeter due to his ability to get to the basket and passing prowess. However, he has a tendency to over-handle it and get himself into trouble leaving his feet while passing. The talent and motor are there for him to play at the next level, but the decisioni making needs to improve.
Tyjae Medley (Birmingham)
2019, PG, 5-foot-8, 160 pounds
Joel’s Take: This one-man fast break is a blur in transition and his passing acumen is impressive as well. He has slick crossover, a tremendous burst, and he can get into the lane at will for the floater or drop-off dime.
