Conference Commentary
Top Ten
Teams that are in the Top 10 of the State in 1A
Bloomfield – 1A is pretty down this year so Bloomfield finds themselves in the top ten. They aren’t going to be world beaters but they are one of the better teams in this sectional. Turner Royal, a junior, is going to have a big year and he’s really going to be the key piece to this team. They have the best shot at getting out of this regional.
Top Ten Potential
Teams that could be in the Top 10 of the State in 1A
Oldenburg Academy – Oldenburg lost their leading scorer last year as well as their fourth leading scorer but they do return everyone else. Oldenburg has the potential to knock a few teams off this year as they return seven guys who played more than ten games last year. The question for this team is how quickly are they going gel together to make it through the early part of their schedule.
Eminence – This is a long shot, but I really think that Eminence has the potential to be a very solid team this year. They return their top four scorers who combined for 42.5 points a game and I would expect those four to combine for close to 50 points a game this year. They were a very young team this past year and I wouldn’t be surprised if Eminence shocks some people this year and rattled off 18-20 wins.
Compete With Most
Teams that could be well above .500 this Season
Providence Cristo Rey – Providence Cristo Rey could be sneaky good this year. They only lost one of their top four scorers from a season ago. Elkin Ramirez, a junior, returns with his 11.0 points a game average. They are an experienced group this year but are mostly juniors. This is going to be year one of a nice little two year run from them.
Seton Catholic – While Seton Catholic did lose their leading scorer who put up 14.0 points per game, they do return everyone else to their team. They run a super deep rotation so everyone coming back has a little but of experience from last year. They had a host of guys average in upper digits and they should all be able to bump their averages up this year.
Parke Heritage – Parke Heritage is in their first season after being consolidated. Rockville and Turkey Run combined to become Parke Heritage. They have a couple key pieces coming back this year including senior Landon Newnum, Rockville’s leading scorer from a year ago. This is going to be a team that could be pretty solid this year because they are drawing from double the player pool now.
Rebuilding
Teams that were good last year but could struggle this Season
University – University was a surprise team last year gelling together with a big senior bunch. Because they lost so many players from last year they are going to struggle early on. The leading returning scorer from a year ago only scored 3.7 points a game. Top top five scorers are gone and University is firmly going to have to build their program back up.
Tindley – When you lose someone like Eric Hunter Jr. as a 1A program, you are going to be hurting the next year. Along with Hunter, four other seniors in the top five of scoring have graduated so Tindley is going to have to really lean on the play of junior Sincere McMahon. I don’t think that McMahon is going to be able to carry Tindley himself and they will be staring a down few years in the face.
Morristown – Morristown lost their top two scorers from a year ago, but I don’t think they’ll be nearly as down as the other two teams on this list. Logan Laster is more than capable of scoring, but they need others to step up this year. They aren’t going to free fall, but after a State Final appearance last year they are going to be down this year.
