Recruiting Report: Tony Johnson Jr (2019)
Point guard Tony Johnson Jr of Eufaula, Alabama is now at Skill Factory in Atlanta where he just grabbed his first high major offer in two years.
Johnson caught Minnesota’s eye recently during a national match-up of talented prep schools. Minnesota and Johnson remain in contact as an offer was extended.
Johnson graduated from Eufaula High School in the spring of 2018 with offers from Florida Gulf Coast and South Alabama plus Auburn and Georgia offered Johnson when he was a high school underclassmen.
Since enrolling at the Skill Factory this fall Johnson has landed scholarship opportunity from Fresno State, Middle Tennessee, St. Bonaventure, Santa Clara, Georgia Southern, and others.
“I’m open right now with my recruitment,” Johnson said. “I’m looking to make a decision in about two months though. I don’t have any dates in stone yet.”
Johnson is a nationally ranked top 350-400 player in the recent Prep Hoops 2019 top 500. Playing with the Skill Factory has given Johnson a chance to compete against talented guards from around the nation.
“I think we play really well in spurts. We are still figuring it out right now but we’re super talented top to bottom, so when we do, we’ll be scary good! I, myself, have been been pretty good. I just have to stay locked in at all times.”
Johnson had a game of 24 points, six boards, and three assists on Saturday in a win over the nation’s fifth ranked team Massanutten Military Academy.
Johnson will continue to be a player Minnesota tracks closely.
“I hear from Minnesota pretty often,” Johnson said “I’ve been in contacts with Coach Kyle Linstead the most and we’re building a good relationship. I’ve also heard from coach Richard Pitino as well.”
Hoop Seen reporter Tai Young recently tweeted that Minnesota has now offered Johnson and a visit could happen soon.
“I hope to visit Minnesota later this month,” Johnson said.
