Recruiting Report: Paul Smith (2020)
Paul Smith was a standout for DeMatha during their recent scrimmage at Mount Saint Joseph. The 6-foot-8 post prospect showcased his full offensive arsenal, and while his shot was not falling, he feels confident about the work he’s putting in.
“I think we did really well. We’re out of shape; really tired early, but as a team I think we did really well,” said Smith when asked to evaluate his team’s performance. “My jump shot is probably the most improved part of my game. It wasn’t going in tonight, but I’ve been improving on it a lot.”
Smith was a matchup problem for MSJ with his ability to go to either hand and finish. College programs such as GW and Delaware are taking notice of his intriguing blend of size and skill, and have both recently offered. Smith has visited both schools, but is also being actively recruited by Mount St. Mary’s, Loyola (MD), and Old Dominion at the moment
“They like I can stretch out. I don’t have to be in the post,” Smith said about the feedback he receives from college coaches. “I can shoot the 3. Make a move from the perimeter. Go left, go right.”
Consistency, especially with his jump shot, is a current area of focus for Smith. He prides himself on the fact that wherever he ends up at the next level, his work ethic will not waver, and that’s a valuable asset which he adds to this DeMatha team.
“I think my role is always the guy who comes in and plays hard. Rebound. Do the little things. Take charges. Protect the boards. Finish. Dirty work,” he explained.
“I’m not really worried about myself right now. I’m trying to win another championship. I’m trying to get a couple more WCAC championships under my belt before I graduate.”
Paul Smith is currently ranked by Prep Hoops as a top-20 prospect in his class. To view the full ranking of Maryland and DC’s 2020 class, click here.
