Here Prep Hoops takes a look at several seniors who have gone from unranked to ranked since our rankings were last updated..
Mason Thiessen, 6’8, PF/C, 2019, Inman, WCS Driven
Previous: UR
Current: 26
Thiessen made the biggest jump in our latest rankings, going from the unranked to the ranked with a debut at No. 26. That is quite a jump, but is largely due to playing high school ball at a small school, and starring for a WCS Team Driven squad that played in a lot of big games this past summer. He has terrific size and a big frame at 6’8, and shows a versatile skill set for a post player. He can bang inside, has some old-school post moves, but can also step out the perimeter and make shots.
Jacob Weber, 6’3, G/F, 2019, Winfield, River City Hoops
Previous: UR
Current: 31
Weber caught our eye this summer while playing for River City Hoops and brought a level of intensity and competitiveness that was mostly unmatched. He has a strong, athletic frame, can run and jump, and has a well-rounded skill set, able to take the ball to the basket, score in the paint or shoot the mid-range. He is still working on becoming a more consistent outside shooter, but we see a player who could be a steal for a small college program due to his intensity and improvement.
Lawson Monaco, 6’4, G, 2019, Manhattan, SSA Elite Black
Previous: UR
Current: 45
Monaco brings a versatile, well rounded skill set and good size to the floor for SSA Elite Black. A guard with good size at 6’4, Monaco came off the bench for SSA throughout the summer and brought the ability to handle the ball, knock down outside shots and some defensive versatility, whether it was defending guards, wing or even an occasional post player. With Manhattan graduating several talented seniors, we see Monaco poised for a breakout season in 2018-19.
Carlos Montiel, 6’3, F, 2019, Hugoton, WKE Eddy
Previous: UR
Current: 37
One of the better players most fans have likely never heard of, Montiel has a big, strong fame and plays much bigger than his listed 6’3 height. He combines a big frame with a well-rounded game and an unorthodox offensive game. He handles it well, likes to drive to the basket and is a good playmaker and shooter from the 3-point arc. He is a tough match-up for most opponents as bigger players struggled to contain him on the perimeter but smaller players struggle with him in the paint.
Chase Franks, 6’3, G, 2019, Olathe Northwest (Kan.)
Previous: UR
Current: 113
Being No. 113 on this list might not sound like much, but when you consider Franks didn’t play basketball as a freshman or sophomore it sheds a different light on the ranking. Franks showed some promise this summer as the Ravens look to a young group of players to fill in for a large graduated class. He has some good bounce, rebounds well and threw some nice passes during Saturday’s action. He largely lets the game come to him and doesn’t try to force things.
