Prospect Spotlight: Will Henricksen (2020)
A short list of guys that are due for a breakout junior season this winter would certainly include Marion 5-foot-10 point guard Will Henricksen.
He spent his sophomore season playing with the Indians’ sophomore team, and playing sensationally. He was unable to play varsity last year because of a 90-day transfer rule.
This summer, we saw him a few times as one of the key figures on a very good Team Iowa 16U squad. And it was his shooting and playmaking that was most impressive.
“My playmaking ability is my biggest strength, and my shooting, I had 60-43-88 shooting splits last season for the sophomore team,” said Henricksen. “And I feel like I’m a solid defender as well.”
That Team Iowa unit was wildly successful by late summer. Henricksen says that by July, they were one of the best teams in the Midwest.
“We had a great coach with Donnie Dobbs, and we really started to click,” Henricksen said. “We play really well as a team and I love playing with those guys.”
Also this summer, Henricksen was getting more acclimated to his still somewhat new teammates and coaches at Marion.
“With Marion, I’ve just tried to get a feel this summer for what the coaching staff wants from me as I’m still trying to get to know them,” he said. “I think Coach (Mike) Manderscheid is one of the best coaches in the state, and I look forward to playing point guard for him this season.”
Henricksen added: “We have big expectations this year, but we have to take it one day at a time. I’m excited for the challenge of getting back to state and giving ourselves a chance to win.”
Still just a junior, Henricksen has ample time to see his recruitment ramp up. Right now, he’s got a few D2s that have been in contact with him.
“I know if I trust the process and continue to work then the offers will come,” said Henricksen. “A Midwest D2 is a goal for me, but my main goal is to to find the right fit in college.”
Will Henricksen is ranked by Prep Hoops as a top 110 prospect in his class. To see the full ranking of Iowa’s 2020 class, click here.
