Prospect Spotlight: Sam Conley (2021)
Spencer County has one of the better groups of Sophomores in the state. Led by wing Sam Conley, the Bears are on the upswing and have 3 years left with their core contributors. Conley is the biggest star of the group. At 6’3 and possessing really good athleticism, Sam plays above the rim when possible and generally plays with a high motor. He spent the summer trying to improve his biggest weakness, his outside shooting. He told me, “In my off-season I worked a lot on my shot as well as getting stronger.” Conley has yet to hear from any colleges or universities about playing at the next level but I suspect that will change over the course of the next year.
Heading into his Sophomore campaign, Conley has a lofty goal for himself, “my goal for this season is to show that I’m one of the top scorers in Kentucky.” As a freshman, Conley averaged 13.9 points on 51% from the field and pulled down just shy of 5 rebounds per game. Sam also has high hopes for his team, hoping for an undefeated season and a state championship. Sam told me, “My goal for my team this year is to beat any team that we come across.” For that to happen, Spencer County will have to get through a much tougher schedule than what they have traditionally played, including a trip to the King of the Bluegrass in December. Conley has been ranked in our 2021 rankings since they first came online but he’s not letting that effect him at all. Sam told me, “I don’t feel any pressure to perform well at all. I know I’m capable of performing well and that’s what I will do.” For Spencer County to have a historic season, Sam Conley will need to be among the best players in the state. He has the potential to perform at that level. I look forward to seeing if he can turn potential into production this season.
