Prospect Spotlight: Ben Wolgemuth (2019)
This past spring and summer, Mediapolis senior Ben Wolgemuth was working hard to refine his versatile skill-set.
Now, the 6-foot-4 forward is ready to showcase his inside/outside ability that he was so routinely flashing with Iowa Pump N Run 17U this offseason.
“I like to get in there and grab rebounds as much as I can and I’m pretty confident in what I can do, not only inside, but I can step out and shoot it a little bit,” said Wolgemuth. “I like having that versatility.”
With Pump N Run, Wolgemuth was able to travel around the Midwest and get a good look at what kind of high-level talent is out there.
“We traveled around a lot and it allowed me to see a lot of competition that I normally wouldn’t see in Southeast Iowa,” said Wolgemuth. “That’s what I really like about that, just going to places like Minneapolis or Wisconsin or Omaha, just seeing that different competition definitely pushed me to be better.”
The Mediapolis standout is heading into his senior season hoping to lead the team in blocks and rebounds, and to achieve first-team all-conference and first-team all-state are goals of his, too.
Leading his team to as many wins as possible is another big goal.
“The biggest thing about my role changing is my leadership role will the big thing for me this year. We’re a really young team and I’ll need to help the younger guys get comfortable with the offense we run, that will impact how well we play this year,” said Wolgemuth.
“I just want to help the team as much as I can, and I’d like to have the best record we possibly could and hopefully go as far as we can in district play.”
Still a very-much available prospect, Wolgemuth has taken visits to in-state D3 programs Simpson and Central, and has stayed in contact with those coaches. He plans to play out his senior season and see what happens.
“I might end up taking some more visits and seeing a few more options and see what my choices are at the end of the season,” he said.
