PREVIEW: Underrated Shooters
With the basketball season set to begin in a few weeks, Prep Hoops Kansas is taking a look at some of the top players across the state in a wide range of categories.
Today, we take a look at several players who were nominated as the state’s top outside shooters players.
Connor Younger, 5’10, G, 2020, Basehor-Linwood @Younger2Connor
Younger is a solid perimeter shooter with a silky smooth left handed shooting stroke who can make a batch of 3-pointers in a hurry. He has a quick, left handed shooting stroke, can handle the ball a little and is capable of pulling up off the dribble.
Zac Burton, 6’1, G/F, 2019, Augusta @zacburton10
Burton is a strong player who can take the ball coast-to-coast, score in the paint, or step out and shoot from the outside where he shows a smooth perimeter shooting stroke. He is a unique player that can play in the paint as a forward despite being somewhat undersized at 6’1, but skilled enough to handle the ball and play on the perimeter.
Carson Cox, 6’0, G, 2020, Beliot
Also a football standout, Cox is another small school player who hasn’t gotten a lot of hype for his abilities on the hardwood. At 6’0, 170-pounds, Cox is a tough, hard nosed guard who brings a combination of skill and a linebackers mentality to the floor. He averaged 10 ppg last season for the 12-10 Trojans, and made 62 3-pointers while shooting 38 percent from behind the 3-point arc. He and 2020 teammate Vincent Palen teamed to knock down 122 3-pointers.
Vincent Palin, 5’10, G, 2020, Beliot
Much like Cox, above, Palin hasn’t gotten a lot of hype during his high school career while playing at Class 3A Beliot, but he turned in a terrific sophomore year at the varsity level, leading the Trojans in scoring at nearly 16 points per game, and proving to be a knock down perimeter shooter. He made 62 3-pointers while shooting nearly 40 percent from behind the arc, and teamed with Cox to make 122 3-pointers during the season.
John Pfannenstiel, 6’1, G, 2019, Ness City @J_Pfannenstiel
A small school standout who hasn’t gotten much hype, Pfannenstiel is a terrific perimeter shooter who can light up a scoreboard in a hurry. Also a football standout at quarterback, Pfannenstiel is a crafty ball handler, a terrific passer with good court vision and has range out to the NBA 3-point arc.
