Northwest Classic: Pool A Player Recaps
The Northwest Classic held at Justin Northwest High School featured some talented teams that have a chance to qualify for playoffs and make deep runs. In this article, we highlight the top prospects from the teams in Pool A of the classic and detail how they did in the showcase games.
Justin Northwest
Avery Anderson / 6’2″ / SG / Justin Northwest / 2019
⭐⭐⭐⭐
Avery did a solid job as the lead guard this weekend. His in between game was impressive as usual. It is fun to see him create off the bounce and score off mid range pull-ups. He also created for others within the offense and had some creative assists. For Avery, it is all about valuing each possession and taking care of the rock consistently through pressure. Habitualizing those aspects of his game is key if he is truly serious about bringing a state title to Northwest High School.
Julien Smith / 6’2″ / SG / Justin Northwest / 2020
Julien shot it well in the game vs. Killeen Shoemaker. He is known for his ability to hit catch and shoot jumpers from deep. At his size however, he must continue to improve his point guard skills and on the ball defense. He can heat up from deep, but will need to find other ways to help contribute that does not involve scoring for the betterment of his team.
Jaylen Peterson / 6’0″ / SG / Justin Northwest / 2020
When your team has guards and a big who can take care of things offensively, you have to find a role for yourself within the team that does not involve scoring. That is what Jaylen provides for this Northwest squad. He did the dirty work for the Texans grabbing rebounds, making layups, and most importantly taking charges. He must become a catch and shoot threat from deep to help take Northwest to the next level.
Mesquite Horn
Preston Aymond / 6’6″ / PF / Mesquite Horn / 2020
Preston played well within himself this weekend. He does not force the action and is always at the right place at the right times on both ends of the floor. Preston spaces the floor for his team and is a decent stationery spot-up option from deep. He had a solid 14 point performance vs. Byron Nelson where he had his inside and out game on display.
