As we begin our final stretch into the much anticipated start to another high school season, it’s time to take a closer look at what to expect. In this series, we will be previewing all four MPSSAA Classifications in an effort to highlight who we think are the top teams and prospects. Below we preview and predict Class 1A.
Havre de Grace
We would not be surprised to see a rematch of last year’s state championship. Despite what should be a “new look” from both teams, Dunbar and Fairmont Heights return good talent that could help lead them back to Xfinity. Malik McCormick, a talented guard prospect who can score and defend at a high level, will be the centerpiece for a Dunbar Poets team that prides itself on the defensive end. Fairmont Heights was led by some very impactful seniors, but Tywon Montgomery looks like he could step in and assume the leadership role quite comfortably. We don’t know exactly how good Havre de Grace will be, but we do know that Marlon Lewis will be a lot of fun to watch. The 6-foot-5 sophomore is one of the best athletes in the state, and will certainly entertain the fans each time he hits the court.
State Champions: Dunbar
State Player of the Year: Malik McCormick | 5’10 PG | Dunbar ’19
While it remains to be seen what type of supporting casts will form around McCormick and Montgomery respectively, what we do know is that both players are good enough to win player of the year and lead his team to a title. When considering the losses that each team has suffered due to graduation and transfers, it’s honestly a toss up between these two teams, but we lean towards Dunbar because McCormick has that ability to take over a game down the stretch on both ends.
