Francis Howell Jamboree: Putting team together
Prep Hoops Missouri was at Francis Howell on Wednesday night to cover its annual hoops Jamboree featuring St. Francis Borgia, Hazelwood East, Ritenour and the host Vikings.
If I were putting a team together from Wednesday night’s Jamboree, it would look something like this:
Point Guard
Daylan Dalton 5’7″ Francis Howell (’19): The quicksilver lefty who plays with tremendous tempo, but has the ability to control his speed and keep opposing defenders off balance. He is an excellent facilitator who will locate open teammates for easy scoring opportunities. He is also a pest on the defensive end with his quickness and ability to shoot the passing lanes.
Wings
Michael Terry 6’2″ Hazelwood East (’19): The transfer from Arkansas adds to an already deep and talented crew of guards for the Spartans. He adds some senior experience to a young group of guards. He is a solid offensive player with the ability to get to the basket and also make a 3-pointer. He has good length on defense and displayed it by picking a few pockets of opposing ball handlers.
Patrick Schulte 6’4″ Francis Howell (’19): A standout soccer player who signed with Saint Louis University on Wednesday, Schulte is also a solid basketball player with the ability to knock down 3-pointers. He is also a good ball handler who can make plays for his teammates. He moves well without the ball and he has some nice bounce, which he displayed on a transition dunk in the first game.
Forwards
Matt Schark 6’4″ Francis Howell (’20): A big-bodied combo forward who has been a matchup problem for opposing defenses since his freshman year. He is an excellent low post scorer with his strength, good fundamental moves and nice touch in the lane. He can also step out and stretch defenses with his ability to make 3-pointers on a consistent basis. He’s a very tough player to guard.
Brendan Smith 6’7″ Borgia (’19): A blue-collar post player who works and grinds every minute he is on the court. He has tough moves around the basket and he did a nice job of finishing at the rim. He was the top rebounder at the jamboree as he controlled the defensive boards for his team. If you are not willing to work hard and match his intensity, you will have problems with this young man.
Class of 2021 Impresses
I was very impressed with the number of Class of 2021 players who stood out at the Jamboree. Here is a few of them:
Jonathan Brown 5’11” Hazelwood East: Smooth lefty combo guard with 3-point range and handles
Moses Yates 6’8″ Hazelwood East: Improving young post player with a big body.
Sam Maddox 6’0″ Francis Howell: Savvy young guard with shooting range who gets to the right spots.
Preston Fortner 5’10” Francis Howell; Nice combo guard who can knock down 3-pointers.
Terry Lowe 6’0″ Hazelwood East: Slashing young guard who plays with a high motor on both ends.
Max Meyers 5’8″ Borgia: Solid lefty guard with 3-point shooting range.
