Five Takeaways: Mount Saint Joseph vs. DeMatha Scrimmage
BALTIMORE, MD — DeMatha and Mount Saint Joseph played five quarters last night in a live scrimmage, and Prep Hoops was in the gym taking in the action. Here we recap the contest with five takeaways.
STAGS STARTERS DEFEND WELL
DeMatha played their starters primarily during the first two quarters, during which they held MSJ to a combined 23 points. Jahmir Young and Justin Moore do a great job pressuring the ball early in the back court, Earl Timberlake can guard almost every position, and Carsten Kogelnik is a good rebounding wing. Hunter Dickinson is a vocal anchor who alters shots with his length.
BISHOP SHOWCASES SCORING PROWESS
James Bishop was responsible for 10 of his team’s 12 first quarter points. The left-hander, who is committed to LSU, showed once again that he can knock down perimeter jump shots with consistency. Bishop’s overall craftiness and ability to create space off the dribble at will should prove useful in late-game scenarios.
JUNIOR BIGS SHOW FLASHES
Two of the better 2020 post prospects in the state were on display last night, and both showed good potential. Paul Smith of DeMatha is the more polished big at the moment, but Javonte Brown demonstrated high level potential when considering his length at 6’11, his touch around the basket, and shot-blocking instincts.
MSJ BACKCOURT DEPTH EVIDENT
2021 point guard Ausar Crawley performed efficiently last night, getting to his spots and showing that he can knock down the mid range pull-up jumper. 2020 Tyler Brelsford, who is about 6-foot-3 now, showed his vision along with the ability to knock down spot up threes. Freshman Antonio Hamlin came off the bench and provided a spark by taking a charge early in this contest, and did a nice job controlling the tempo in transition.
TYRELL WARD IMPRESSES
When engaged, freshman Tyrell Ward showed that he has very good defensive potential when considering his length, quickness, and versatility. Offensively, Ward exhibited a tight handle with the ability to create and knock down shots off the bounce.
