Five Takeaways: East Nashville versus McGavock
McGavock won two overtime games within five hours, the second 92-88 over hosts East Nashville.
Five thoughts emerged after the second win of the day.
1) East Nashville is falling LESS than any team losing five starters in Tennessee.
Taras Carter, in particular, is ready for district dominance. The explosive point guard has that absurd explosion of a disruptive ball-handler.
He scored 30 points and pulled down an enormous final second defensive rebound in regulation. After the Raiders fouled he hit both free throws too.
Carter plays like a smaller Derrick Rose. Every single part of his game is predicated on speed and first burst.
It can be. True speed is remarkably difficult to account for.
Caleb Grimes (East Nashville) can shoot. Quick as he needs to be his mid-range was not falling Saturday. It looks reliable though.
Grimes scored 14 points, but missed most of his second half shots unfortunately.
2) Marvin Hughes is not alone.
Last season Marvin appeared to be incredible and incredibly alone for entire games. The McGavock Raiders won 10 games last season and look fully capable of winning 10 by January 1st this campaign.
Monte Streate handles all kinds of pressure and somehoe made a challenged overtime-forcing three pointer off the backboard.
He transferred in to MHS from Whites Creek.
3) Isiaiah Jones has a high ceiling as the RSD 15u player begins his sophomore season.
Sophomore wing Isaiah Jones stands about 6-foot-3 with strong shoulders and thin (for now) arms. As he grows into his body he already shows impressive body control.
Isaiah slides his feet well and projects as a average perimeter defender at Division I level.
Can he score at that lofty level? Possibly.
The moves are there. Right now they take a little too long to execute at varsity level, but he is merely a month away from being a consistent double figure scorer at a tough program.
4) East Nashville players have some grit to them.
After made baskets in the first half both Taras Carter and Caleb Grimes barked towards McGavock players. The East Nashville starters had no intentions of playing Beta Male to their opposition. The late Saturday night would be a brawl and East Nashville wanted to protect their house with pride.
There are two edges to that sword though and Taras Carter earned a technical foul midway through a tighly contested fourth quarter for taunting after his nice block.
5) McGavock rebounds emotionally.
When the McGavock players wanted to they rebounded pretty well. When they didn’t invest East Nashville pummeled them. In the second quarter more than once East Nashville pulled down two offensive rebounds on the same possession.
