Five Intriguing Prospects: DeMatha vs. SSSAS Scrimmage
Hyattsville, MD — DeMatha hosted St. Stephens & St. Agnes for a preseason scrimmage on Wednesday afternoon, and Prep Hoops was able to catch the action. Below we look at five intriguing prospects who stood out during this matchup.
ELIJAH HAWKINS | DEMATHA 21
In the absence of Josh Wallace, who was playing football, Elijah Hawkins has played very well off the bench from the lead guard spot. Hawkins is a quick, pesky on ball defender who loves to pick up full and turn his man in the back court. Offensively, he’s a skilled and crafty ball handler with range who can create space for his own shot, but has the vision and playmaking ability to find others as well.
DONOVAN MILLER | DEMATHA ’20
Donovan Miller has been playing some good ball this preseason, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see him establish a consistent role off the bench this season. It looks like Miller is maturing and finding his niche within the context of the game.
ANDRE SCREEN | SSSAS ’20
He’s still got a ways to go, but Andre Screen asserted himself in this contest. An imposing paint presence, Screen pridefully protected the rim, rebounded, ran the floor, and finished strong at the rim. He also showed good footwork, patience, and confidence on the low block.
TYRELL WARD | DEMATHA ’22
Tyrell Ward continues to impress this preseason. Ward is a big guard who once again showed a good handle and the ability to create space for his own shot. He still has a lot of room to grow defensively, but the potential is clear.
THAI’RE VANCE | DEMATHA ’19
Thai’re Vance is a nice sleeper in the local 2019 class. A 6-foot-3 wing who can fill a variety of roles, Vance is coming into his own this preseason. Don’t be surprised to see him carve out a significant role with this team during the season.
