Event Preview: Legacy Nissan Classic
North Laurel High School has hosted the Legacy Nissan Classic each of the last three seasons and annually features some really good early season match-ups. Here’s a quick breakdown of this weekend’s event.
Friday, November 30:
- Mercer County takes on Sheldon Clark at 6 pm. Carter Baughman and the Titans take on Trey James and the Cardinals. James actually attended Mercer County for a year of middle school when his brother, Dylan, was a star for Mercer. Mercer has about zero post depth so James should feast on a smaller team but it remains to be seen if he will have enough scoring help to get a win over the 12th region foe.
- The 7:30 game is Hamilton Heights, Tennessee taking on First Love Christian out of Pennsylvania.
- The finale of the evening tips at 9 pm and features JJ Ramey and Matt Cromer of South Laurel taking on Athens Prep out of Tennessee. The Cardinals are being challenged for a second straight game after opening the season at Scott County Tuesday night.
Saturday, December 1:
- The action gets underway at 1 pm when North Laurel takes on Pineville. 8th graders Reed Sheppard and Ryan Davidson join forces with Adam Sizemore to form a solid core for the host Jaguars.
- The 2:30 game features Chase Sanders, Matthew Taylor and Corbin going up against Cordia. With Cordia, you literally never know who will show up. They could be loaded with kids from the east coast like in years past. The Redhounds will find out on Saturday afternoon.
- At 4 pm, Russell County takes on a Madison Southern team reeling from a tough loss on Tuesday night to rival Madison Central. Southern is led by Junior forward Trent Moberly.
- The rest of the day’s games feature out of state teams Quality Education from North Carolina taking on Hamilton Heights from Tennessee at 5:30. Kentucky native Mason Shifflett and Teays Valley out of West Virginia play Athens Prep from Tennessee at 7. The final contest of the weekend features Hargrave Military Academy (with 2018 John Hardin forward Mickey Pearson) out of Virginia taking on Beckley Prep from West Virginia. Beckley features 2018 Fern Creek graduate Ahmad Price.
