There are some kids who can really score the ball already and will only get better as they mature physically and develop their games. Here’s a breakdown of the top shooting guards and combo guards in the class.
- Ben Johnson, Lexington Catholic – This season should be a big time breakout for the Lexington Catholic star. Johnson is going to have to carry a significant scoring load for the Knights this season, especially early on. Ben is the youngest of three boys and both older brothers scored a lot of points at Catholic before heading off to D1 schools.Ben could be the best of the bunch and he has a chance to be one of the highest scorers in school history before he graduates.
- Dashawn Jackson, Frederick Douglass – Dashawn will challenge Johnson to be the best sophomore in the city this year. They will face off next weekend in a scrimmage I am looking forward to. Jackson is a versatile scorer with a high ceiling that can get to the rim or knock down open shots. With a big year, Dashawn could hit 1,000 career points by the end of his sophomore year. His ceiling as a prospect is the highest of anyone on this list because he’s athletic and long and has the intangibles that college coaches love.
- Kelly Niece, Simon Kenton – After spending most of his AAU season playing a limited role on a team up an age level, Niece looks to get back to being the man on the court. Kelly scored a career high 37 points in the last game of his freshman year and hopes to pick up where he left off in March. After losing a lot to graduation, Simon Kenton will be relying on Niece to do a great deal of scoring this year.
- JaQuais Franklin, Elizabethtown – Franklin is a two sport star whose college future could be on the football field but he has a lot of potential on the basketball court too. After losing Darius Harding to graduation, Franklin should step up to be the main scoring threat on the roster for the Panthers this year. JaQuais has good positional size and knows how to attack the rim. If he can continue developing his game and make himself a better shooter, Franklin could be a top player in the 5th region this year.
- Alijah Watts, Hopkinsville – Alijah is a high scoring lefty who attacks the rim in transition and is a good finisher. Although Watts is an inconsistent shooter, he can make perimeter jump shots. If you’re looking for a surprise impact player in the second region, Alijah is a good choice as he is going to have the ball in his hands a lot and knows how to put the ball through the net.
Other Top Shooting/Combo Guards to Know:
Grant Profitt, Scott – As a 3rd or 4th option at Scott this year, Profitt should get a lot of open looks.
Connor Robinson, Clay County – Crafty finisher with a high IQ, Connor’s only hindrance is a lack of athleticism.
Cory VanHoose, Johnson Central – Cory has maybe the best motor in the state. He never takes a play off.
Colby Napier, Knott County Central – My pick for a surprise in the 14th region, Napier is a lights out shooter with a high ceiling.
Dante Hayden, Danville – Averaged 7 points per game as a freshman and should double that this season for a good Danville squad.
