There is some decent depth in the point guard group but behind wings and combo guards as far as best position groups in the class go. Here’s a look at the top ranked point guards in the Sophomore class.
- Zion Harmon, Marshall County – Zion has been ruled ineligible and has his appeal denied but is looking at other options to get eligible for the Marshalls this season. Until he’s exhausted his option, he’ll stay atop this list. On the court, Harmon can score at will and is an excellent passer. He’s short but so crafty that he makes up for his lack of height.
- Jaden Rogers, Fern Creek – Recently handed the keys to the Tiger offense, Rogers heads into his sophomore season with a lot of pressure to fill the shoes of former Creek point guard Anthony Wales. Jaden should be up to the challenge. He comes off a strong AAU season playing top tier competition and is going to be tested early and often as the new floor general for one of the best teams in the 6th region.
- KJ Crump, University Heights – One of my favorite players in the class, Crump returns for a second year of starting for the Blazers and will look to help get them back to Rupp Arena in March. KJ is quick and shifty with an exceptional handle and the ability to score the ball regardless of his smaller stature. KJ knows how to run a team and has the leadership qualities that you don’t see in all players these days.
- Kale Gaither, Union County – Gaither will be counted on a lot for Union County this season after a transfer from Henderson. Gaither was extremely impressive as a freshman at Henderson but had a rough AAU season and struggled to score the ball. Look for Kale to have a bounce back season at Union if he can get back to being the efficient scorer I saw at Henderson last year.
- Wade Pelfrey, Hazard – Wade is a strong point guard who can finish at the rim by bullying his way there. Pelfrey is strong and smart and has a chance to be the best point guard in the mountains for the next three years. Hopefully Hazard can schedule some games in central Kentucky where he can get more exposure and get his name out there more. Coming off a good AAU season, Wade should ride the wave of momentum into a really strong Sophomore campaign.
Other Point Guards to Know:
Q’Daryius McHenry, Grayson County – Strong and athletic PG but his future is likely on the football field.
Conner Cooper, Bowling Green – Cooper is an excellent defender whose offense needs to catch up to his defense for him to reach his ceiling.
Jaz Johnson, Wolfe County – Jaz will score a ton of points this year. As a prospect, he has to prove he can guard his position against D1 caliber players.
Noah Dumas, McCracken County – Really good athlete and a crafty finisher, Dumas could be the breakout player in the first region this year.
Nash Divine, Muhlenberg County- High IQ floor general is growing and starting to bulk up. Should be a surprise in the 3rd region.
