- Zion Harmon, Marshall County – After much debate, Harmon stays on top of the rankings for now. Not a debate of his abilities but that Zion has been ruled ineligible this season and lost his appeal. For now, we will wait to see if he gains eligibility through the courts or makes another move. Harmon is a really good player who is always shrouded in controversy. Between 4 schools in 4 years, rumors that he is older than he claims and the constant reclassification rumors, it can be hard to remember that at the end of the day Zion is a top 25 recruit nationally in 2021 and has earned that distinction with his play over time.
- Darrius Washington, Fern Creek – Washington has more potential than just about anyone in the 2021 class but it’s time to start turning that potential into production as a Sophomore now that he is going to have a massive role this season for the Creek. At 6’7 and well built, Darrius looks like a D1 freshman already. He’s skilled and can play inside and out. The biggest issue for Darrius this season is proving his motor runs all the time. If he can play as hard as he’s capable and combine that with his skills and size, he has high major recruit written all over him.
- Trey James, Sheldon Clark – Another player whose potential is through the roof, Trey is going to have an interesting Sophomore year. After the two leading scorers left Sheldon Clark over the summer, James is the only one left at Sheldon Clark. He could face double teams all season. If his team wants a chance to win much this season, all the weight falls on Trey’s shoulders. His offensive game needs to catch up to his defense and shot blocking. If he can make those strides on offense, Trey has a chance to be a high major player.
- Scotty Draud, Beechwood – Scotty may have the most potential in the 2021 class. He’s already 6’5 and still growing, still adding muscle and working to become a more complete player. The best thing for Draud is that he has a ton of offensive freedom at Beechwood and that helps his game develop as much as anything. Coming off a freshman season where he averaged 21 points per game and an AAU season where his team saw big success early, Draud has drawn the eye of several D1 coaches and should be a mid major or better wing in college at worst.
- Ben Johnson, Lexington Catholic – Johnson has a lot of expectations on himself as the youngest of three brothers. His older brothers were both big time players at Lex Cath and now play Division I in college. Ben should be the main man at Lex Cath this year for a team that was hit hard by graduation. He should start to get the type of offensive freedom that his brothers got and he’s going to need to average in the 20s as a sophomore to carry a young Catholic team, especially early. I expect Johnson to handle the pressure and make his case for being the best player in the city by the end of the season. Look for several high scoring games from the 6’3 combo guard this year.
The Next Five:
Jaden Rogers, Fern Creek – Shifty point guard has high major interest already.
DaShawn Jackson, Frederick Douglass – Tough scoring guard who could have the potential to be top player in the class eventually.
Isaiah Mason, Bowling Green – Long, athletic wing who should make a huge jump in his sophomore year.
KJ Crump, University Heights – High IQ point guard leads one of the best offenses in the state.
Kelly Niece, Simon Kenton – Crafty combo guard knows how to get a bucket.
