2020 Rankings Breakdown: Biggest Sleepers
It’s not about how you start, its about how you finish. These prospects may not have entered high school with the hype of some other top players, but they will finish right there. Over the course of four years, a lot can happen and a lot can change.
These kids have come a long way from their freshmen year and are looking to make a bigger impact on their teams this coming season. With a chance to leave their mark on the high school season, these players will give us something to look forward too.
These are the names you should pay attention to this season.
Mutdung Bol, Edmonds-Woodway HS, 6’3 PG: Mutdung Bol is often over looked. Maybe it’s because he doesn’t play for a big time high school. Maybe its because he doesn’t have the flashiness most other guards have. College coaches haven’t overlooked the all league point guard as he has accumulated division one interest from multiple schools. Bol averaged 15 points last season while also showing the ability to pass the ball. Even though he proved he is capable scorer, Bol is likely a better on the defensive side. With is length and quick feet, makes him a tough out every night. What makes Bol such an interesting prospect is that he could possibly still grow 3-5 more inches.
Weston Ide, Zillah HS, 6’4 F: Weston was on the state championship team in 2017 and was a big part of the team last year that fell short of repeating. This do-it-all forward is the work horse for the Zillah basketball team. Ide is the defensive anchor, as he averaged just over a block a game. He plays the power forward for the leopards but can play all five positions. Weston is a great rebounder who can shoot from the outside and can handle the ball better then he expected. Zillah returns all of their starters from a year ago, so they expect big things this year.
Jaylen Scott, Lincoln HS, 5’11 PG: In his first season as the full time starter, Scott did not disappoint. Earning 1st team All-SPS as a sophomore, while averaging 19 points per game. Unfortunately, a knee injury ended his season after 16 games and kept him out of summer ball. Coming into his junior season, Scott will suit up for the Lincoln Abes. The Tacoma point guard has a mature game and is a coach on the floor. He can get to his spots and make plays from all over the court. His shooting and ball handling ability makes him a tough matchup everynight. Tacoma is known for producing premier point guards and Jaylen Scott is looking like he’s next up.
Syon Blackmon, Eastside Catholic HS, 6’0 PG: Syon should see his role increase with senior standout and team captain Brock Mackenzie moving on. Blackmon excels on the defensive end where he usually draws the other teams toughest assignment. On offense, Syon is a slasher who can finish well through contact. He is a player who catches his rhythm by getting stops on defense. He is a capable catch and shoot shooter who when left open can make you pay. Syon Blackmon will play a pivotal role in the crusaders success this season.
Dominique Michaels, Nathan Hale HS, 6’6 F: Michaels is a 6’6 athlete who hasn’t even touched the surface of his potential. Michaels can play above the rim on offense and defense. He runs the floor really well and is best at attacking straight line drives. He continues to improve his jump shot and his ball handling to make him a more versatile stretch 4/wing. After losing leading scorer Freddy Brown lll, Michaels will have much more responsibility this season. With the new head coach and Seattle basketball purest, Dominique Brooks at the helm, we should be expecting something good from Nathan Hale this season.
