2019 Watchlist: Big Men On Campus
Washington is knew for producing top tier guards like Jaylen Nowell, Kevin Porter and Daejon Davis to name a few. The 2019 class has some big men who have flown under the radar but are ready to show how big their game really is.
The big men that you should take note of heading into the season are here. Take a look at some of the big men from the class of 2019.
Christian Colwell, Lynden Christian HS, 6’8 PF: The big lefty was a key factor in leading the one lose Lynden Christian team to a 1A state title. Colwell does a great job turning defense into offense. He can block a shot on one end, beat everyone down the court and get a transition layup on the other end. He has good footwork on the block and can finish with either hand. The combination of Christian’s high motor, strength, and mobility make him a difference maker whenever he is on the floor.
Matthew Kroner, Chaiwana HS, 6’8 F: Chaiwana looks to play from the inside-out. When you have an all league post player in Mathew Kroner, it makes for an easy gameplan. The 6’8 senior is a workhorse, as he tends to collect double doubles almost religiously. Kroner isn’t limited to just posting up; he is a capable shooter from three. This allows teammates to drive and take advantage of the space that is created from Kroners shooting ability. Mathew Kroner will only continue to grow as this season unfolds.
Evan Dirksen, Columbia River HS, 6’6 F: Dirksen is an extremely skilled big. The Menlo College commit can beat you in a multitude of ways. He can stretch the floor with his ability to shoot the standstill three. He rim runs very well and is always under control. Evan is a very patient post up player. Looking over both shoulders before putting the ball down. He prefers the face-up technique and he uses his jab step very effectively. The most underrated part of his game might be his ability to pass out of the post. Evan Dirksen wants to finish his career strong before heading to California for the next four years.
Abdul Mohamed, West Seattle HS, 6’8 F: Mohamed has all the skills you want from a big. He possesses guard skills which allows him to bring the ball up court and take his man off the dribble. Runs well in transition and understands how to get great post position. Abdul can face up or play with his back to the basket. He is a strong finisher, able to play through contact. With his respectable jump shot, makes Abdul an all-around offensive talent. Mohamed, an Eastern Washington commit, will have a dominant year for West Seattle High School this season.
