In this series we take a look at the potential candidates for Mr. Basketball in the state of Illinois for this upcoming season. Here we profile some of the Super Sleepers for the award. Remember two years ago Mark Smith from Edwardsville was a dark horse and by mid-season he was the favorite! Could one of these guys be next?
PG Tyler Beard (Whtiney Young)
Beard didn’t play most of his sophomore season at Whitney Young, but broke out with his play over the summer with Meanstreets and at Nike Elite 100. Explosive lead guard that can get to the rim and get others involved.
Lance Jones (Evanston)
Jones had an outstanding junior campaign for Evanston last year helping them get downstate. He has the surrounding cast with a loaded sophomore group to do it again! Sound pull up jump shooter that can play both on and off the ball.
PG Marquise Walker (West Aurora)
Walker continues to bounce around high schools going from St. Joseph’s to Curie to now West Aurora. The senior seemed to find his groove late in the season as a junior, but that momentum stalled this summer. Can he get it back?
SG Max Christie (Rolling Meadows)
Juniors hardly ever win this award. It is almost impossible to imagine a sophomore winning it. If it was to happen this would be the one. Christie is perhaps the top prospect in the state regardless of class and after he burst on the scene as a freshman he is ready to dominate as a sophomore.
SF Ryland Holt (Gibson City)
Holt is a versatile central Illinois prospect that jumped onto the scene with a monster spring/summer for the Illinois Irish. Expect this small high school standout to post insane numbers and he could get in the mix like Taylor Bruninga did a few years back.
G Malik Tidwell (Marian Catholic)
Tidwell is a big time volume scorer that comes in a bowling ball compact package. He is your prototype small college guard that will post monster numbers on a top team.
PG Ahron Ulis (Marian Catholic)
These two Marian Catholic guards will cut into each other’s production a little, but it will be good for winning. Ahron is the younger brother of NBA PG Tyler Ulis. He is a quality scorer and has a high basketball IQ.
Tyler Cochran (Bolingbrook)
Like the two guards above Cochran has so many talented guards around him specifically Joseph Yesufu that he won’t get the numbers he could on many teams, but he will be on a team that has a chance to get back to state. Insanely productive guard that boards and scores at a high rate.
Anthony Fairlee (Springfield Southeast)
Fairlee might be the most explosive pure athlete in the senior class. Big time dunker and plays above the rim with thunder! He got his team one game away from a state championship last year. Wants to close the deal this season!
Nate Ferguson (Lemont)
Ferguson is a face up four man that broke out with Chicago Lockdown during the summer. He has greatly improved his strength and athleticism. Ferguson is committed to Drake.
Tujuatae Williams (Orr)
Williams will be the man this year for the defending 2A champs. Orr lost the majority of their team, but luckily for them Williams took his game to new heights over the summer. He is playing his best basketball at heading into his senior year.
Joseph Yesufu (Bolingbrook)
Yesufu is a senior point guard who is committed to Drake. Elite speed in the open floor going end to end. He gets to the rim and has a knack for making difficult layups.
