Recruiting Report: Matt Onken (2018)
Marshall power forward Matt Onken is one of the tougher and craftier four-men in the senior class. He gave the Tigers 13 points and seven boards a game last year and is ready for a big season.
“I’m really looking forward to getting back out there with the guys to show what we can do and that we can compete with anybody,” Onken said. “I’m also excited to take on more of the leadership role this year and show how hard I’ve worked on my game.
“We have a great group of guys coming back so the goals will be pretty high as always. I personally want to win our conference and our section to get back to state. November 19th can’t come soon enough!”
Between now and then Onken is working on parts of his game to get better.
“My ball handling and perimeter shooting is what I am working on,” Matthew said. “I’ve been putting in a lot of time working on both so hopefully I can show the improvement this year.”
Schools continue to talk to Onken as he has visited a number of schools and will soon visit more. Onken also recently picked up an offer.
“I have visited St. Johns, Concordia-Moorhead, Northwestern, and have been offered by Jamestown and am visiting there November 12th. The two schools showing the most interest have been Northwestern and Jamestown.”
Onken is looking forward to trying to get back to the state tournament. The first time was special and Matthew is looking for that again.
“The state tournament sophomore year spending a week with the team, all the memories in the hotel, buses, and at the games,” Matthew said. “And to top it all of getting third in state, that was definitely the most memorable thing in my basketball career.”
