Recruiting Report: Dereon Seabron (2019)
There’s always one guy that throughout his senior season in high school shows that he should be recruited at a much higher level than he was. That guy last year was Lake Taylor’s Dereon Seabron, who was Class 4 State Player of the Year and led the Titans to a state championship.
The 6’6” guard had seen a lot of mid majors come in and try to recruit him late, but the amount of high major coaches that were reaching out to him about prepping was just too much and he decided to attend Massanutten for one more year.
Seabron made his debut with MMA against Oak Hill in a scrimmage last week, and he showed some promise in his first game as a point guard running the offense efficiently and finishing with 12 points, 4 assists and 4 rebounds. While they lost by 15, they made some good adjustments in the second half and showed a lot of promise for a team in their first game.
“I just feel like we need to get in the gym and work, work on the things we didn’t do well today,” Seabron said. “Everything will work out though.”
The transition to point guard will be the big thing for Seabron this season. At 6’6”, many high major schools are intrigued at his potential as a ball handler that can cause mismatches on both ends of the floor. He’s still learning a new offense and all of the things that come along with running the show for a talented program.
“It’s going well, I’m working at it every day,” he said. “Working on reading pick-and-rolls, getting my teammates involved and facilitating at a high level. I need to continue to get more shots up and get my shot to where it’s knock down and I’ll be good.”
Seabron has recently seen his recruitment pick up majorly since the school year started. As a senior at Lake Taylor he started to garner attention from high major programs, and with the extra year it’s starting to turn into more offers.
He recently picked up offers from Minnesota and VCU, both of which he took official visits to over the past few weekends. He’s taking an official visit to ECU this weekend, and says that he plans to take his final two visits to Virginia Tech and NC State, but doesn’t have a time table on them yet. He says he’s also picked up offers from ECU and SMU, and is hearing the most recently from VCU, SMU, NC State, Georgetown and ECU.
Seabron was named VHSL Class 4 POY after leading Lake Taylor to a state championship. While the offers are starting to come in, Seabron still knows he has things to improve on and he has to prove himself every night if he wants to play at that level.
“I just need to dominate every night and try to win a national championship.”
While he’s in no rush to make a decision, Seabron says he wants to enjoy it but get it over with at the same time. He wants to weight his options and says that he’ll likely make a decision during the season at some point toward the end of December or beginning of January. According to him, it’s going to come down to where he feels wanted the most.
“I want to go somewhere I can play and have the ball in my hands when I step on the court.”
Expect Seabron to continue to see more and more high major coaches come in before his decision is made, but whenever it is made they’ll be getting a versatile guard with good size and a high ceiling. A win for any coaching staff.
