Prospect Spotlight: Rylan Van Komen (2019)
After a summer showing out on his 17U grassroots team, Skyridge 6-foot-4 wing Rylan Van Komen is eager to get out on the floor for his senior season with the Falcons.
A little bit more of an outside shooter than a slasher, Van Komen has the ability to do both. And is always working to improve his game.
“I’m a pretty good shooter, I like to shoot a lot of 3s, and then I drive to the basket. I like to run out on fast-breaks and get those started,” said Van Komen.
“I’m working to improve my pull-up jumper and my on-ball defense a little bit.”
In addition to playing 17U ball with Salt Lake Metro this offseason, Van Komen was spending plenty of time with Skyridge at team camps.
“With Skyridge, I felt that I played pretty good and did well. With Metro I played well, too. I ended up being the leading scorer for our year, those AAU tournaments went really well,” said Van Komen.
As a junior he played sparingly on a senior-laden Falcons squad. Now, a senior himself, Van Komen is ready to make a much larger impact this season.
“Right now, I’m starting at the four, but when we bring in some bigger guys off the bench, I’ll move to the three or the two,” said Van Komen.
With still his senior season ahead of him, Van Komen is continuing to wait out the recruitment process. He’s had a little bit of interest come in up to this point.
“I’ve had some D3s calling me and I went and visited the University of La Verne. I went and practiced at an open gym with Utah Valley University, the coaches invited me down there about a month and a half ago,” said Van Komen. “And I’ve had some coaches emailing me through recruiting websites, saying they’re interested.”
He added: “My goal is to go D1, and also my goal, if I can’t get that, is to go to somewhere I can get it paid for with my basketball. Also, I just want to get a lot of coaches watching me this season.”
