PREVIEW: On the Cusp (2019)
With basketball practice a month away, Prep Hoops takes a look at several players to watch this upcoming season, starting with some Kansas players who are on the cusp of a breakout season.
Armahn Downing, 6’1, PG, 2019, Washburn Rural
Downing has emerged this offseason as one of the state’s top rising guards after a strong summer running with SSA Elite. He. missed some time a year ago to injury, but came back strong to finish out the season and then carried that success over to the season. He is capable of handling the ball and playing either guard position with ease.
Savonni Shazor, 6’6, G/F, 2019, Lawrence
Shazor is a long, rangy wing player who can do a little bit of everything. He’s a solid ball handler who can create a little off the bounce, and is a consistent outside shooter, capable of knocking down open 3-pointers. He is coming off a strong offseason and is poised for a big season at Lawrence.
Devin Walker, 6’7, F, 2019, Ulysses
Walker is a skilled big man who runs the floor exceptionally well and brings terrific agility to the floor. He can score in the paint, works well along the baseline and shows terrific form and balance on his outside shot. He can knock down shots from 15-18 feet, but has extended his range out beyond the 3-point arc.
TJ Williams-Bey, 5’11, G, 2019, Aquinas
Also a standout of the football field, Williams-Bey is dynamic with the ball who has a collection of moves on the fly. He has solid handles and the ability to finish through the air with opponents in his face. He’s shifty when he needs to be, someone who is almost always bringing his best to the floor.
