PREVIEW KC: Youngsters names to know (guards)
As part of its 2018-19 preview series, Prep Hoops Missouri takes a look at some of the state’s top players in a variety of positions in the rising sophomore class.
Below are several guards in Missouri’s 2021 class you should know.
Colby Baggett, 6’2, G, 2021, Lee’s Summit West (Team Rush)
Baggett is a long athletic point guard who got significant varsity run as a reserve last season as a freshman on a talented Lee’s Summit West team. He has a good set of handles and he used his quick first step to consistently beat defenders off the dribble, plus he was an excellent finisher at the rim. Baggett has good length and a rangy build and uses it to his advantage at the defensive end of the floor exceptionally well.
Steve Strong Jr., 6’0, G, 2021, University (MoKan Elite)
One of the Kansas City area’s premier young guards, Strong is a rising prospect who can handle it, shoot it, lead a team at the point and put the ball in the basket. He is coming off a terrific offseason running with MoKan Elite 15U squad. He has a high arcing 3-point shot that he can shoot off the catch or create off the bounce.
Quran Taylor, 6’1, G, University Academy (Marcus Denmon Elite)
Taylor impressed with his play this past spring at the Prep Hoops 250 Expo at Blue Valley West, showcasing good size, athleticism and a high skill level. He has smooth handles and can create for himself of his teammates. He likes to play at a face pace and is capable of grabbing a defensive boad and going coast-to-coast.
Cameron Mathews, G, 2021, Blue Springs (Marcus Denmon Elite)
Mathews is coming off a strong summer competing for Marcus Denmon Elite and is poised for a breakout season at Blue Springs. He has a smooth quality to his game and plays under control. He can create off the bounce and has a nice floater that he uses in the lane well.
