PREVIEW: 2021 names to know (guards)
As part of its 2018-19 preview series, Prep Hoops Kansas takes a look at some of the state’s top players in a variety of positions in the rising sophomore class.
Below are several guards in Kansas’ 2021 class you should know.
Garrett Alejos, 6’3, G, 2021, Blue Valley North, Mokan
A lanky wing who handles the ball well. Alejos brings good size and athleticism to the floor. He is terrific in transition, moves well off the ball and can get his shot off quickly in front of defenders.
Javon Grant, 5’10, PG, 2021, Pittsburg
One of the more underrated guard prospects in Kansas, Grant was a key contributor for a Pittsburg team that advanced all the way to last year’s state championship in Topeka. Grant brings speed, quickness and the ability to play high level defense to the floor. He is one of the better young guards at pressuring the basketball and causing havoc in the backcourt.
Ty Sides, 5’10, PG, 2021, Phillipsburg
Sides is one of the better young small school guards in Kansas and brings terrific leadership qualities to the floor. He is capable of playing either guard spot and has a smooth 3-point shooting stroke. He can handle the ball well, gets to the basket and is a terrific playmaker.
Kaleb Gaddis, 5’9, PG, 2021, Andover, NLHA 15U Perez
Gaddis is coming off a strong offseason competing with NLHA and brings smart, heady play to the floor. He is a true point guard with a high basketball IQ who is willing to defer to his teammates. Gaddis can get to the basket a little off the bounce, using a crafty handle and the ability to finish in traffic.
Dawon Zenger, 5’11, G, 2021, Rock Creek
Zenger is coming off a standout offseason competing for SSA Elite and figures to be a big part of the Rock Creek playing rotation this season. Zenger has a smooth all-around game with good handles, a smooth perimeter shot and the ability to be crafty off the bounce and make plays.
